Fire kills ten in Covid-19 ward: Hospital blaze breaks out at intensive care unit in Romania

At least ten people have died and seven are critically injured after a fire broke out at a hospital treating Covid-19 patients in Romania.

The blaze burned through two rooms housing 16 intensive care patients in Piatra Neamt before it was extinguished, an emergency services spokeswoman said today.

Irina Popa, for the Emergency Situations Inspectorate, added it is believed some of those killed 'were infected with Covid-19'.

She said several patients remained in a serious condition following the fire, including medical staff who were burned in the blaze.

Among those injured was a doctor who suffered burns to 80 per cent of his body, Stiri du Bucovina reported.

Those receiving treatment were reportedly transported to the burns unit at a hospital in nearby IaÈ™i following the fire.

Romanian health minister Nelu Tataru said the blaze was 'most likely triggered by a short circuit' inside the hospital.

Piatra Neamt is around 219 miles north of Romania's capital, Bucharest.
