'Selfless' junior doctor, 26, is killed in motorway crash on his way to check on unwell patient while he was off-duty from his Covid ward

A 'selfless' junior doctor has been killed in a horror car crash while he was checking in on a coronavirus patient during his time off.

Abdulrahman Elbayouk, 26, was off-duty from his shift on the Covid ward of the North Manchester General Hospital when he drove to see a patient on Saturday night.

But his Renault Clio hit a Highways Maintenance Lorry parked on the hard shoulder at Junction 3 of the M56 near Stockport.

He was pronounced dead at the scene after the 9.45pm crash, while a 57-year-old man and 35-year-old man were taken to hospital with minor injuries who have both since been discharged.

No arrests have been made and enquiries remain ongoing.

Dr Elbayouk, who worked at North Manchester General Hospital in Crumpsall, was described as a 'great man' who was 'full of positivity'.

In a statement released on behalf of his family, his brother Omar Elbayouk said: 'No words can describe what we are feeling right now. Abdulrahman was the rock of our family.

'He was the perfect son and brother, always looking out for us and putting our needs before his.

'His smile was infectious and his actions were always selfless. He made every person that crossed his path feel special and taken care of.

'His presence will be sorely missed but we pray he is in a much better place.'

Dr Elbayouk had moved from his hometown of Rugby, Warwickshire, to study at the University of Manchester around seven years ago.

His friend, Ahmad Balhawan, said: 'He was a great man, full of positivity. It moved a lot of people in Manchester, this news.

'He was here to work. He was into all sports, he inspired a lot of people in the community, in a lot of mosques.

'He was a doctor, he was on the frontline. I cannot imagine what his family is going through.'

Dr Elbayouk was a religious man and taught the Quran at the Masjid Salahadeen in Fallowfield.

A spokesman for the mosque said he was much-loved by the children he taught and will be missed by his class and the community.

In a statement, the Masjid Salahadeen said: 'Certain people in life embody positivity, optimism and hope. They empower and lift those around them, benefiting both the community and their aakhirah.

'In his short but incredibly productive young life, he was part of many student and community initiatives. ISOC, Fosis, AskDoc, GRF charity to name but a few.

'We are grieved at his passing, and so very sad for the void he leaves behind for his family and friends.

'However, we bear witness and are comforted by knowing Abdulrahman has returned to his Creator with mountains of good deeds and an incredible legacy.'

A spokesman for Didsbury Mosque, which he also attended, said: 'Dr Abdelrahman was a very special young man with the best of character.

'He was a very well known and active member within the community, we have been flooded with condolences since his tragic death and this is a testimony to how loved and respected he was.

'We pray that God showers His mercy on him and grants him the highest level of paradise.

'Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.'

Det Con Emma Kennedy, of GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: 'This is a devastating incident and our thoughts remain with the man's family at this very difficult time.

'Our officers are working hard to find out exactly what happened in the lead up to this collision and we are appealing for anyone who may have information to come forward and speak to us.

'This is a busy motorway and we believe that there are a number of witnesses who may have dash cam footage or information that can assist us with our enquiries.'
