A homeless man suspected of setting a man on fire in a car outside a convenience store has been charged with murder, authorities said today.

Raymond Sean Clark, 38, pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to one count each of murder and arson causing great bodily injury.

The allegations include special circumstances that would make him eligible for the death penalty, but Los Angeles County prosecutors have not decided whether they'll seek it.

Authorities say 63-year-old Jerry Payne was in his SUV outside a Long Beach 7-Eleven on Friday when Clark walked up and tossed a flammable substance inside, enveloping Payne in flames.

Bystanders helped douse Mr Payne with water but he died in hospital on Monday.

Coroner's Chief Craig Harvey said Mr Payne's cause of death was burns he suffered on his upper torso.

Clark was arrested nearby. Investigators are trying to determine what motivated the attack.

Mr Payne suffered third-degree burns to his chest and face with his orange T-shirt burned off his body, according to the Beachcomber blog.
