Oklahoma tornado 2013: Facebook users trying to help reconnect survivors with lost belongings and photos

Fragments of photos and family momentos were sent all over Oklahoma state following the storms on Sunday and Monday, and now a crew of concerned residents are trying to get them back to their rightful owners.

Now hundreds of Oklahomans are posting photos on a dedicated Facebook group, showing pictures they found in the wake of the storm, and one such group has already received more than 7,200 shares on the social networking site.

Since it was created on Sunday, the founder estimates that more than 60 items have been returned to their owners after being publicized on the site.

Truly missed: These photos, which clearly were taken many decades ago, were all found in Bethel, Oklahoma on Sunday, more than 110 miles away from where the tornadoes touched down in Shawnee

Success story: This photo of a deceased couple will now be reunited with their living relatives with the help of a Facebook-friendly friend

Leslie Hagelberg told The Huffington Post that she created the group after she found a stranger's photograph strewn by her mailbox on Sunday following storms in Shawnee, Oklahoma.

Happy result: Both those in the pictures and those familiar with the people effected helped make connections

Aside from being one random photo, she also noticed pieces of roofing insulation scattered on the lawn and realized that they must have been from the storm that touched ground more than 90 miles away.

That isn't even the furthest distance recorded by members of the group, as one person noted that they live 250 miles from where the devastating tornado touched down and they found a memento outside.

'I'm just trying to help. I couldn't imagine losing my kids' picture,' Ms Hagelberg told The Huffington Post.

The only suggested rules come into play when people find truly important documents- like social security cards and checks- when she asks users to please blur out any details that could lead to identity theft.

Though she has been deleting posts of successfully-matched items in an effort to create room for the barrage of items still yet to be identified, there are a few success stories visible.

One man spotted a picture that someone posted of him and his friends from middle school in Moore, Oklahoma. The Good Samaritan found the photo in Prettywater, a town more than 100 miles away.

Another touching story came when someone discovered a photo of an elderly couple dated 1993. A person who knew the now-deceased subjects reached out to the person who posted it, saying that they could get in touch with the relatives.

The personal possessions will likely be a small form of relief for the hundreds of people whose lives were truly upturned in the devastating storm, as miles and miles of homes were destroyed and at least 91 people were killed on Monday.

Precious: Since it's creation, the Facebook group founder said that at least 60 had been returned to their owners, but this particular picture remained unclaimed

Reconnecting: Some of the photos that were found were of momentous family events like pregnancies

Old friends: This picture of Mr Wooten's middle school class was spotted by him online, after it was found 100 miles away

REACHING OUT TO RESCUE THE ABANDONED ANIMALS

In an effort to help in any way that they can, many turned to the photo group to help publicize pets that they had either found wandering around aimlessly following the storms or ones that they knew were in harms way.

'I tried to get the only one w a collar to come to me but he/she wouldn't the other two were very friendly had I not had my dog in the vehicle w me I would if tried to take them home until owners found,' wrote one Facebook user who posted a picture of a chocolate lab and small white pup wandering a highway.

In an effort to keep the various strands separated, Ms Hagelberg has launched an entirely different Facebook group for people to post about lost and found pets, so that the original group can remain dedicated to reconnecting owners with their lost belongings.

Weary wanderers: The chocolate lab appears to have mud spattered across its back from the storm

Missing: Desperate pet owners have posted pictures of their dogs- Ivan at left and Jack at right
