Nearly 6,000 migrants cross English Channel in first six months of 2021: Figures show record number of people continue to make journey in small boats despite Priti Patel's vow to make route 'unviable'

Record numbers of migrants continue to make the trip across the Channel in small boats, with nearly 6,000 reaching the UK in the first six months of 2021. Men, women and children still risk the dangers involved in crossing the 21-mile Dover Strait in rubber dinghies, despite Priti Patel's vows to make the route 'unviable'. The total figure for 2020 could be eclipsed within two months if the number of crossings seen in July and August last year are repeated. The PA news agency, which tracked and analysed crossings for the last 18 months, can report more than 5,900 people have got to the UK on small boats in 2021. A total of 8,417 made the journey in the whole of 2020, a figure that was quadruple the number for 2019. June 2021 saw nearly 2,200 people picked up after crossing the English Channel, a new record surpassing the 1,951 from September 2020. The number for June 2021 was more than three times the number for June 2020, a trend that if repeated in July would see the tota

Teenager, 19, who killed her friend, 18, in car crash hours after she passed her driving test is banned from the road for 12 months

A teenager who killed her friend in a car crash hours after she passed her driving test has been banned from the road for 12 months.  Katy Butler, who had just turned 18 at the time, lost control of her vehicle on a bend just a mile from her home and smashed into a tree in Hamble, Hampshire. Passenger Abbie O'Rourke, 18, of nearby Netley Abbey, was taken to hospital but later died, Southampton Crown Court heard.  After stopping in the car park of a recreation ground just minutes from her home, Butler drove down a nearby country lane for the first time. While listening to music and chatting to her friends, she lost control on a sharp bend and the silver hatchback ploughed into a tree. Butler had picked up three friends to go for a drive in the 11-year-old Toyota Aygo after passing her test earlier that day, the court was told. Bill Cosby supporters clash with anti-rape protesters outside comedian's mansion hours after Pennsylvania Supreme Court overturned his conviction

Bill Cosby supporters have clashed with an anti-rape campaigner outside the freed comedian's house - as others took to the internet to say they're glad he's out of jail. A man and a woman were seen squaring up to an anti-Crosby activist outside his home in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday after he was freed. The female protester - who was toting a megaphone - chanted 'Change the law' and 'This is about rape.'  But the male supporter - who was carrying a placard saying 'Bill Cosby is innocent' - took exception to her claims, and repeated the slogan on his placard saying: 'Bill Cosby is innocent.'    He continued chanting his counter-protest, with the female Cosby supporter - who held up a sign saying 'Don't mess with Bill' seen telling the megaphone-bearing woman to 'Go home.' Bill Cosby supporters turned up to welcome him back to his mansion in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday after his indecent assault convi

China threatens its enemies with 'broken heads and bloodshed' in thinly veiled swipe at US as President Xi boasts of Communist Party bringing 'order' to Hong Kong on party's 100th anniversary

China will not allow itself to be bullied and those who try face 'broken heads and bloodshed in front of the iron Great Wall of the 1.4 billion Chinese people', President Xi Jinping said today in a thinly veiled swipe at the U.S. Speaking at a mass gathering to mark the centenary of the ruling Communist Party, President Xi emphasised the party's role in bringing China to global prominence and saying it would never be divided from the people. Wearing a grey buttoned-up suit of the type worn by Mao Zedong, Xi spoke from the balcony of Tiananmen Gate as he bragged that China had restored 'order' in Hong Kong following anti-government protests in the semi-autonomous city in 2019. He also reiterated Beijing's determination to bring self-governing Taiwan under its control.
