Lori Loughlin's husband Mossimo Giannulli loses bid to finish his five-month prison term at home after his lawyers argue he has been placed under 'extreme' conditions in solitary confinement due to a COVID-19 outbreak in the jail

Fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli's request to serve the remaining three months of his prison term in the college admissions bribery scheme at home was denied Tuesday by a federal judge. Giannulli, 57, argued he should be released to home confinement for the rest of his five-month sentence because he spent eight weeks under 'extreme' conditions in solitary confinement because of the coronavirus pandemic after reporting to prison in November. But U.S. District Judge Nathaniel Gorton said Giannulli failed to demonstrate an 'extraordinary and compelling' reason warranting his release,' though he noted that the quarantine was 'longer than anticipated'. Giannulli, who reported to prison on November 19, believed he would only be held in quarantine for a short time before testing negative for the coronavirus, his lawyers said in court documents.  Instead, he spent 56 days isolated in a small cell at California's USP Lompoc before being transferred to a min

Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jews throw rocks at riot cops and set fire to vehicles as police blast them with water cannons during anti-lockdown protests in Israel

Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jews have clashed with riot police during anti-lockdown protests in Jerusalem. Protesters threw rocks at vehicles, used large bins to block roads and damaged a bus during the Tuesday morning demonstration in the ultra-Orthodox Mea Sharim neighbourhood, The Jerusalem Post reported, citing police. Police responded with water cannon, dispersing the crowds and arresting eight people. The clash was among several reported on Tuesday - the latest confrontations between Israel's ultra-Orthodox, or haredi, community and law enforcement over restrictions intended to curb the spread of coronavirus.   Hundreds of people threw rocks and eggs at police during a protest in the heavily-ultra-Orthodox city of Beit Shemesh, where reports suggested three people had been detained.  Elsewhere, in Modi'in Illit, a settlement in the West Bank, dozens attempted to block a police vehicle and violently confronted officers trying to enforce lockdown restrictions, according to I

Teachers go on strike in France where classrooms have remained open and staff are demanding higher salaries amid Covid crisis

Teachers have gone on strike in France demanding higher salaries and more government support amid the Covid-19 crisis. Schools have remained open since September because of the government's concern over learning gaps, despite threats of a third lockdown in the country. Schoolteachers and university students marched together in protests or went on strike Tuesday around France to make their demands. 'No virus protocol, no school!' read posters carried by schoolteachers, demanding better virus protections at their schools. 'Sick of Zoom!' chanted university students, frustrated that they've been barred from campuses since October. The common concern at Tuesday's protests in Paris, Marseilles, Lille, Lyon and other cities around France was economic. A sombre Boris Johnson tonight appeared at Downing Street to say he was 'deeply sorry' as the UK's Covid-19 death toll officially rose above 100,000 for the first time. The Prime Minister appeared alongside Professor Chris Whitty, England's chief medical officer, and NHS CEO Sir Simon Stevens, to say it was 'hard to compute the sorrow' that Britain has been through in the past year.  This Sunday will mark one year since the first two people were taken to a hospital in Newcastle after being found with coronavirus in York. Since then, 375,000 people have been admitted to hospital with the Covid-19 and at least 100,162 have died. The Department of Health today announced the deaths of 1,631 more people. Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer today called the figures a 'national tragedy'. Speaking at a sombre Downing Street press conference today, Mr Johnson said: 'On this day, I should just really repeat that I am deeply sorry for every life that has been lost a
