Killer Christmas tree: Inflatable costume's internal fan is blamed for COVID outbreak at California hospital that killed one staffer and infected 43 after it blew virus droplets across ward

The giant inflatable Christmas tree costume blamed for spreading COVID-19 to at least 44 California hospital staff, killing one, has been pictured on the wards.   At least 43 staffers have been infected with COVID-19 within the past week and officials are investigating whether the inflatable worn by an employee for the holiday may have caused the outbreak via its internal fan. The staffers at the Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center Emergency Department tested positive between December 27 to January 1. The woman who died has not been named but was described as 'absolutely wonderful' by her colleagues. Officials said a staffer briefly appeared at the emergency department on Christmas Day wearing an air-powered inflatable costume. The employee who wore the costume has not been revealed but it may have blown virus droplets across ward.  'A staff member did appear briefly in the emergency department on December 25th wearing an air-powered costume,' Irene Chavez, senior

Scott Morrison says Julian Assange will be 'free to return home to Australia' once his legal proceedings in the UK are over - after a judge blocked his extradition to the US

Prime Minster Scott Morrison has declared Julian Assange will be free to return to Australia once his legal battle in the United Kingdom is over. A British judge on Monday ruled the Wikileaks founder - who was born in Townsville, Queensland in 1971 - cannot be extradited to the US to face spying charges due to the risk of him taking his own life in an American jail. US officials wanted to put him on trial for conspiring to hack government computers and violating an espionage law by releasing top secret documents about US military campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq. The US government is expected to appeal the decision but if that appeal also lands in Assange's favour then he will be a free man after almost ten years in prison or self-imposed confinement. Mr Morrison avoided passing judgement on the decision but said Assange would be able to travel home if he his freed. 'I note the decision overnight and like any other Australian I understand that's subject to appeal... assumi

What happened to no shoes, no service? Thirsty currawong takes a sip of beer at a pub and likes it so much he asks for a few more

Currawongs are one of Australia's favourite birds, so it shouldn't too surprising one could enjoy a day at the pub. Shannon Bourke was enjoying a beer on Christmas Day when a currawong joined him and began drinking out of his schooner glass. A video of the curious currawong sitting on a phone while it sipped beer was uploaded to Instagram on January 3. A man enjoying a beer has been joined by an usual drinking buddy- a currawong with a taste for beer 'Oh my god, he's drinking beer!', said Mr Bourke. After one sip, the bird appeared to enjoy it as it was filmed taking a few more.  'Are you f**king serious?  In a hilarious attempt, the man offered the bird another alcoholic beverage it might enjoy. 'Do you want to try a Smirnoff Black? It's better than beer,' he joked.  'Oh my god, he's drinking beer!' The man, Shannon Bourke, is in disbelief of what is happening in front of his eyes The bird could be seen contemplating the drink before r

The book Silicon Valley tried to kill: ABIGAIL SHRIER'S investigation into the exploding numbers of girls wanting to change sex has caused an outcry in America – but her story must be heard

The increasing number of young girls wanting to switch gender has become an explosive subject as parents, scientists and campaigners warn of the irreversible, life-changing dangers. When ABIGAIL SHRIER, a writer for the Wall Street Journal, investigated the issue for a book, her first prospective publisher pulled out following protests by staff.  Then, amid a furious row over free speech, an English professor at one of America's top universities suggested the book should be burned. And when Shrier was interviewed for a podcast hosted by Spotify, staff at the streaming giant threatened to walk out.  And although Amazon sells her book, it has refused to let Shrier's publisher buy online adverts. In face of these attempts at censorship, Shrier has condemned what she calls 'tyranny's advance', saying: 'This is what censorship looks like in 21st Century America.  'It isn't the government sending police to your home.  'It's Silicon Valley oligopolists
