All from Tier 2, are you? High Streets in towns with lower Covid restrictions are packed with festive shoppers despite warnings not to travel from high risk areas

High streets in towns with lower Covid restrictions are packed with festive shoppers despite warnings not to travel from high risk areas. Shoppers packed into Bicester Village shopping centre in Oxfordshire on Sunday to hunt for last minute Christmas presents.  Travel restrictions have been put in place to stop people spreading the virus in London and the south east - but pictures from neighbouring towns today appear to show some people are simply travelling away from harsher measures to go shopping elsewhere.  The shopping centre, which is in the Cherwell district, is in Tier 2, meaning non-essential shops can remain open. Armed Proud Boys and Patriot Prayer members storm Oregon State Capitol building during anti-lockdown protest shouting 'We just want our rights back!'

About 300 anti-lockdown protesters, some of them armed, gathered outside the Oregon State Capitol building and forced their way in on Monday as lawmakers convened for a special session. Governor Kate Brown called for the special session closed to the public where lawmakers discussed pandemic relief and vaccination distribution funding, as protesters gathered to oppose COVID-19 restrictions.  The 'Reopen Oregon' rally started around 9am comprised of members of the Proud Boys, Patriot Prayer and other far-right groups, some seen carrying rifles and pistols and waving American flags and Trump banners.  They were heard chanting 'We just want our rights back!' and 'USA!'  About 100 demonstrators forced their way into the building from two entrances and once inside they shouted obscenities and yelled 'Let them eat cake!' as dozens of armed state troopers blocked a door into a hallway.  Shortly before 9.30am police declared unlawful assembly and said protesters

Sackler family expressed fears they could be targeted in lawsuits over OxyContin a DECADE before being sued for fueling the opioid crisis and transferring $10.7billion from their company Purdue Pharma

Members of the wealthy Sackler family, owners of OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma LP, have long denied that the $10.7billion they transferred from their company over the course of a decade was an unlawful attempt to shield assets in anticipation of litigation over their role in the opioid crisis. But a review of emails, memos, depositions, legal motions and other documents unsealed late on Friday in Purdue's bankruptcy proceedings show Sackler family members discussed potential litigation exposure at least as early as 2007, a full decade before they faced a new wide-ranging legal attack and significant financial transfers stopped.   Purdue faced investigations and litigation before 2007, which it settled. Whether creditors can demonstrate that financial transfers since then were legally dubious hinges in part on whether they can show that the Sacklers knew they faced additional and significant litigation that could threaten Purdue's solvency and the family's wealth, estimated

Highways England could face manslaughter charge over death of grandmother, 62, who died in horror smash when her car broke down on the M1 'smart motorway' with no hard shoulder, inquest hears

Highways England could face manslaughter charges over the death of a 62-year-old grandmother who was killed on a stretch of smart motorway, an inquest has heard. Nargis Begum, from Sheffield, was the passenger in a Nissan Qashqai car, driven by her husband, Mohammed Bashir, 67, which broke down on the M1 in South Yorkshire, near Woodhall Services, in September 2018.    Mrs Begum, a mother-of-five and grandmother-of-nine, had exited the car and was waiting for help when another vehicle collided with the Nissan, causing it plough into her. The stranded Nissan had its hazard lights on when the other vehicle collided with it but the lane, with no hard shoulder, had not been closed to traffic.    At a pre-inquest review in Doncaster on Monday, coroner Nicola Mundy heard how 16 minutes and 21 seconds elapsed between the Nissan breaking down and the collision.
