Boris Johnson will phone European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen today to 'take stock' of Brexit progress ahead of critical negotiations next week. The Prime Minister and Ms Von der Leyen still need to overcome 'wide divergences' to avoid a No Deal, according to the top negotiators for Britain and the Bloc.  Briefings between the two leaders are seen as key moments in the talks, with the last conversation in October seeing discussions 'intensified' before a fallout after the European Council meeting briefly derailed the negotiations.  Mr Johnson said he hoped a deal could be concluded in the next seven to ten days. Man dies after 'being stabbed in the chest' as his 21-year-old girlfriend is charged with his murder

A woman has been charged with murder after allegedly stabbing her partner to death at a home in Nowra on the New South Wales south coast. Emergency services were called to a unit in Nowra about 6.35pm on Friday, where they found a 27-year-old man with a stab wound to his chest. Officers and paramedics performed CPR until the man was airlifted to St George Hospital, where he later died. A 21-year-old woman was arrested at the scene and charged with murder as a domestic violence offence. She was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court on Saturday. Britain will close its borders with Denmark amid fears a Covid mutation spreading from mink to humans could derail the race to a vaccine.  The full implications of the new strain are not yet known – but the Danish prime minister warned it could pose a 'risk to the effectiveness' of a future Covid-19 vaccine. Denmark has already ordered a cull of its 17 million mink. The country was initially dropped from the UK's travel corridor list in the early hours of Thursday – but following emergency talks yesterday, ministers decided on the unprecedented step of blocking all arrivals from Denmark.  Denmark has locked down seven towns in North Jutland where a strain of coronavirus that evolved in mink was identified in humans.
