Ruling the waves: Royal Navy heroes defend Britain on land, sea and air in breath-taking pictures for the armed force's annual photographic competition

A collection of incredible photos showing the lives of sailors and marines at sea and on land have been released after they were picked as winners for this year's Royal Navy photo competition. The pictures, which normally go unseen by the public, have all been recognised in the annual Peregrine Trophy Awards.   Each photographer is a Royal Navy sailor or marine that has worked in a particular branch of the Forces before being accepted into the photographic role and their work involves following warships and commandos to capture behind-the-scenes images and videos or operations, training and equipment. Leading Photographer Kyle Heller, who was part of HMS Queen Elizabeth, was named the Royal Navy's photographer of the year for his portfolio after the vessel's deployment to America's east coast which saw the first British F-35B Lightning jets land on the aircraft carrier. Speaking after receiving his award, Kyle said: 'This is a job like no other - it sounds clichéd,

Cowadunga! Cowpats could be used to power milk tankers around the UK as dairy farmers try to turn mucky manure into biofuel

Cowpats could be used to power the tankers that transport milk around the country, if a trial is successful. Leading UK dairy co-operative Arla is taking part in an experiment in which manure is turned into biofuel to provide a ‘limitless source of energy’. The process will also create fertiliser which farmers can use on their fields. Two milk tankers will be converted to run on the methane-rich fuel – sourced from 500 cows.  Leading UK dairy co-operative Arla is taking part in an experiment in which manure is turned into biofuel to provide a ‘limitless source of energy’ (file photo) The vehicles are expected to cover 60,000 miles over three months, with the manure helping to reduce carbon emissions by 80 tonnes – the equivalent of 23 cars travelling all the way around the world. Arla farmer Ian Barker said: ‘Many of us recognise how valuable a cow’s milk is, but many aren’t aware manure is just as important.  'Processing cow manure in this manner provides us with a limitless sourc

Oh deer! Tory donor Ben Goldsmith keeps his government job as Defra board director - despite breaking his own department's rules over release of deer from his land

In the clear: Jemima and Ben Goldsmith Ben Goldsmith will retain his government job despite breaking his own department’s rules over the release of deer from his land. Environment Secretary George Eustice acknowledged the 39-year-old financier had made an ‘error’ in breaching guidelines on wild animals. But he said the ‘rewilding toff’ had apologised and still had much to offer in his role as a board director at the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. The decision means Mr Goldsmith, a longstanding Tory donor and brother of environment minister Zac Goldsmith, will face no consequences for behaviour that has enraged many in the farming community. Mr Eustice had been under pressure to sack Mr Goldsmith since July, when the Mail revealed red deer had escaped from his Somerset farm because of inadequate fencing.  The deer damaged neighbours’ land and Mr Goldsmith admitted falsely claiming to nearby farmers that he was having the creatures rounded up. Why 'stubborn' Queensland premier could shut the border AGAIN within days ruining holiday plans - as Gladys Berejiklian reveals Annastacia Palaszczuk's 'sneaky' tactics

New South Wales premier Gladys Berejiklian has warned the state border with Queensland may not reopen on the promised date of November 1. Her Queensland counterpart Annastacia Palaszczuk announced on Friday she would relax the harsh restrictions and reopen the border to all of NSW residents.  Thousands of holidaymakers would be allowed to freely travel into the state ahead of Christmas in a massive boost to the local tourism industry.     But Ms Berejiklian said she her momentary excitement lapsed when she learned the November reopen date was still based on a 28-day-free community transmission policy. Canada says it will continue to restrict all non-essential travel to and from the US until the coronavirus outbreak is much less serious in both nations. The comments by Canadian Public Safety Minister Bill Blair suggest that the ban on travel could stay for months to come as cases continue to spike in both countries    The measures, which do not effect trade, first went into effect in March and were set to expire on October 21 - but are likely to continue far beyond.   Blair told reporters that Canada would keep the restrictions in place 'until the conditions on both sides of the border...change very substantively, until we can be assured based on the advice we receive from our public health officials' that the measures could be lifted safely.
