Priti Patel's Taser shocker: Home Secretary lets police use 'more painful' stun guns that experts warn can pose a risk to passers-by

Priti Patel yesterday authorised the police to use a ‘more painful’ Taser stun gun which could cause more serious injuries. The Home Secretary has given formal approval for forces to use the new Taser 7 for the first time. Her move came despite an analysis by Government scientists that the weapon could lead to more suspects suffering internal injuries and broken bones. They also warned that passers-by now risk being hit by probes which inflict the electric shock as the Taser 7 allows them to detach from the gun after being fired.  The Taser, introduced in Britain in 2003, incapacitates a target with a high-voltage electric pulse which causes muscle spasms. The Taser 7 also makes a louder ‘arc’ noise – a kind of electric crackling – before firing which aims to make violent suspects back down The scientists said the Taser 7’s probes are more powerful than previous models and this implies it will be more effective but ‘may be more painful for the subject’.  They added that ‘free-flying pr

U.S. judge dismisses lawsuit against Danske Bank over money laundering scandal

By Jonathan Stempel NEW YORK, Aug 24 - A U.S. judge on Monday dismissed a lawsuit accusing Denmark's Danske Bank A/S and four former top executives of defrauding shareholders by hiding and failing to stop widespread money laundering at its former Estonian branch. U.S. District Judge Valerie Caproni in Manhattan said shareholders in the proposed class action failed to sufficiently plead that the bank improperly reported revenue derived from money laundering or downplayed its supervision failures. She also said the plaintiffs, led by four pension funds in New York and Massachusetts, failed to show that Danske acted recklessly or with conscious disregard that its statements were false and misleading. "They allege in a conclusory way that defendants and employees of received reports contradicting public statements, and fail to connect any of those reports to specific representations by specific persons," Caproni wrote. The plaintiffs had sought damages for investors who los

Pressure mounts for premiers to open their borders over shortages of teachers, farm workers and food - as Annastacia Palaszczuk is slammed for 'playing politics' by keeping Queensland shut

State premiers are facing growing calls to ease border restrictions amid fears they are damaging regional communities and crippling businesses. Nationals politicians on Tuesday morning called for borders to come down between states that have little or no community transmission of coronavirus.   Victorian senator Bridget McKenzie said border restrictions were preventing the movement of workers and goods and threatening national supply lines. Trump to nominate acting U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Wolf to permanent post

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he would nominate Department of Homeland Security acting Secretary Chad Wolf to permanently serve in the role. In a post on Twitter, Trump said he was “pleased to inform the American Public that Acting Secretary Chad Wolf will be nominated to be the Secretary of Homeland Security.” Trump, a Republican who faces re-election on Nov. 3, made immigration a central focus of his first term in office as well as in his re-election campaign against Democratic nominee Joe Biden. Still, even as immigration has been a top issue for Trump, he has cycled through leaders at DHS, which oversees immigration enforcement. Trump's announcement comes after here the U.S. Government Accountability Office found earlier this month that Wolf's appointment as acting secretary did not follow processes outlined in federal law, and top Democrats called on Wolf and Deputy Secretary Ken Cuccinelli to step down. U.S. Senate Democrats unveil $400 billion-a-year plan to tackle climate change

- Senate Democrats on Tuesday unveiled a plan to tackle climate change that calls for the U.S. government to spend more than $400 billion a year to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The plan is the latest in a series of blueprints from Democrats detailing how the United States can combat global warming. None are likely to proceed in the current Republican-controlled Senate but could get traction if the chamber flips to Democratic control after November’s election. “When Democrats retake the majority in the Senate we will be united to move swiftly,” Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said on a call with reporters. “Passing climate legislation will be a top priority.” Spokespeople for the Senate’s Republican majority leader, Mitch McConnell, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The plan would aim to create at least 10 million jobs in areas like clean energy manufacturing and research and development for new technologies, the 260-page report by the De

Republican convention heads to White House as Melania Trump takes spotlight

WASHINGTON - The Republican National Convention moves to the White House on Tuesday night, where first lady Melania Trump is to make the case for re-electing President Donald Trump as his race against Democrat Joe Biden takes a harsher tone. Republicans painted a dire portrait of America if former Vice President Biden wins the Nov. 3 election at a convention sharply scaled back due to the coronavirus pandemic, with Trump campaign adviser Kimberly Guilfoyle warning on Monday that Democrats want to “destroy this country.” Democrats on Tuesday criticized the tone of the Republican convention, saying Trump was to blame for the severity of the coronavirus outbreak, which has killed more than 177,000 Americans - more than any other country in the world - and thrown millions out of work. “Last night was grim and spiteful and fear-inducing,” Michigan Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer told reporters in a call. Potentially playing into the dark picture Republicans have painted, parts of Ken

U.N. Security Council president dismisses U.S. sanctions move on Iran

NEW YORK - The president of the U.N. Security Council, Indonesia, said on Tuesday it was “not in the position to take further action” on a U.S. bid to trigger a return of all U.N. sanctions on Iran because there is no consensus in the 15-member body. Thirteen council members expressed their opposition on Friday, arguing that Washington’s move is void given it is using a process agreed under a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers that it quit two years ago. Indonesia’s U.N. Ambassador Dian Triansyah Djani, council president for August, was responding to a question from Russia and China on the issue during a meeting on the Middle East. U.S. Ambassador Kelly Craft hit back after Djani spoke. “Let me just make it really, really clear: the Trump administration has no fear in standing in limited company on this matter,” she told the council. “I only regret that other members of this council have lost their way and now find themselves standing in the company of terrorists.” U.S

Engram showing signs of breakout season, health permitting

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - New York Giants tight end Evan Engram is tired of listening to people talk about his talent, potential and, of course, his injuries. In three seasons, the 2017 first-round draft pick has missed 14 games with knee, foot, hamstring problems. "I am really in the now," Engram said Monday after practice. "Last year is last year. I am just blessed to be healthy right now, to be back on the field with my guys. Like I said, each day is an opportunity to empty the tank. I am not going to take that for granted." Engram got off to a phenomenal start last season, making 23 catches for 277 yards and two touchdowns in the first three games. The tight end who has receiver-type speed coupled with blocking ability was living up to the expectations. Then the injuries came. He sprained a knee against Minnesota and missed a game against New England four days later. He played in the next three games, but sustained a mid-foot sprain against Dallas on Oct. 6 and m

American Airlines to cut 19,000 jobs in October without aid, workforce shrinking 30%

CHICAGO - American Airlines said on Tuesday its workforce will shrink by 40,000, including 19,000 involuntary cuts, in October as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to weigh on air travel, unless the government extends aid for airline employee payrolls. Airlines received $25 billion in U.S. government stimulus funds in March meant to cover payrolls and protect jobs through September. As the money runs out without a travel recovery in sight, airlines and unions have lobbied Washington for another $25 billion, but talks have stalled as Congress has struggled to reach agreement on a broader coronavirus assistance package. Shares in American, which had 140,000 employees before the pandemic, fell 2.7%. In a memo to employees, Chief Executive Doug Parker and President Robert Isom said the first relief bill had assumed the virus would be under control and demand recovered by Sept. 30. “That is obviously not the case,” they said. Texas-based American’s announcement comes in the midst of the four

Wisconsin city braces for third night of protests over police shooting of Black man

KENOSHA, Wis. - Authorities in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Tuesday were readying for a third night of unrest after the shooting of a Black man in the back by police, with the governor vowing to boost the presence of the state’s National Guard to curb looting and arsonists. The announcement by Governor Tony Evers that he would seek to augment the Wisconsin National Guard’s presence - more than 100 members were deployed on Monday - came as other officials called for a more forceful response to the sometimes violent protests. Kenosha County Board of Supervisors member Zach Rodriguez said the board would hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday on seeking federal help, such as U.S. Marshals Service officers, after some 300 rioters looted businesses and set fire to buildings overnight. “Essentially, our city was burned to the ground, building by building,” Rodriguez told Reuters. “Enough is enough.” Officials were bracing for a repeat of Monday night when smoke billowed over central Kenosha and pol

Cash-strapped Caribbean recovers from deadly Storm Laura

PORT-AU-PRINCE/HAVANA - Caribbean islands already reeling from the economic impact of coronavirus started recovering on Tuesday from the damage wrought by Tropical Storm Laura, which left at least 24 dead and damaged thousands of homes and electricity infrastructure. Brigades of workers were out fixing toppled power poles, removing fallen trees blocking roads and repairing roofs after the storm blustered through the region’s largest countries. - Laura has become a hurricane since exiting Cuba on its northwestern path towards the United States. Laura caused the most damage in Haiti, where preparedness is weak while deforestation has left the country vulnerable to flooding and landslides when there are heavy rains. Torrents of water carrying rocks down from the mountains barreled through a marketplace in a ravine of Port-au-Prince before dawn on Sunday, including the warehouses where many vendors were sleeping. “I came here straight away only to find my mother dead,” said Lorius Joseph

Research suggests better treatment for missed miscarriage patients

A new drug combination may be more effective for women having miscarriages without symptoms than current standard NHS treatment, new research suggests. Missed miscarriage – also known as delayed or silent miscarriage – is when a baby has died in the womb but the mother has not had symptoms, such as bleeding or pain. According to charity Tommy’s National Centre for Miscarriage Research, current hospital restrictions on surgery mean many women face waiting for the miscarriage to happen by itself, which can take weeks, or being offered medication to speed the process along. National guidelines recommend a treatment called misoprostol, which is successful in most cases. But some women wait anxiously for weeks, repeating the medication and eventually needing surgery. However, research published in the Lancet indicates misoprostol is more effective when combined with mifepristone which is an anti-progesterone drug used to induce labour. Hurricane Laura takes aim at Houston, threatens millions; 400,000 ordered to evacuate

HOUSTON - Hurricane Laura could make a direct hit on Houston this week and hundreds of thousands of people living on the Gulf Coast should evacuate immediately, officials in Texas warned on Tuesday. Crude oil production in the Gulf of Mexico has been paralyzed as companies batten down operations. Output cuts are nearing 90%, a level not seen since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Lina Hidalgo, the top executive for Harris County, which encompasses Houston, warned of deadly winds and a destructive storm surge after Laura makes landfall late Wednesday or early Thursday. She said that put millions of lives at risk as Laura moved westward and took aim at the fourth-biggest city in the United States. “This storm certainly can cause unprecedented devastation,” Hidalgo said at a news conference. “We truly have to say: Prepare for the worst.” The hurricane was packing winds of 75 miles per hour (120 km per hour) as it moved across the Gulf of Mexico, qualifying it as a Category 1 hurrican
