Wine could become 'only for the elite' if Government bans drinks

Wine could become too expensive for anyone but the wealthy thanks to Government restrictions and taxes, says one major retailer. A potential ban on multi-buy offers in supermarkets and the recent 10p rise in wine duty could be responsible for drinkers turning to beer instead, according to Stephen Lewis, the chief executive of Majestic Wine. This could reverse the 'revolution' of people enjoying a glass of wine with a meal, he said. A potential ban on multi-buy offers by the Government could lead people to abandon wine for cheaper drinks, says one retailer 'Having established this culture of food and wine, you know, which is a sea change from where we were 30 years ago, why would we want to stop that?' Mr Lewis, whose chain has nearly 200 stores in the UK. told the Daily Telegraph. He said that banning drinks offers in supermarkets would not solve the problem of anti-social behaviour. More... Bees get sweet revenge as police look for hive vandal

The vandal scattered nine hives at Bodelwyddan Castle, North Wales, and damaged their frames, causing its entire stock of bees to be destroyed. Police are hoping to track down the person, who would have been heavily stung in their attack, and would have needed treatment afterwards. Call in the SWAT team: Police under attack for creating 'crazy compensation culture'

A policeman was paid £8,000 compensation after being bitten by fleas while at work. The extraordinary injury claim was made after colleagues complained that their police station in Birmingham had become infested with the insects. It was one of a number of workplace injury claims paid by West Midlands Police which, over the past three years, has spent £900,000 settling cases made by more than 50 policemen. West Midlands police have come under attack for their compensation payouts. The highest single payout was £22,000. This week Home Secretary Theresa May ordered an investigation into such payouts, amid nationwide concern that routine injury claims are damaging the reputation of the police. Just weeks ago, WPC Kelly Jones triggered public outrage and criticism from her own chief constable for suing a burglary victim for £50,000 after tripping over a kerb. Claim: WPC Kelly Jones, 33, has launched the health and safety claim against the owner of the station in Thetford, Norfolk, wh
