Marine Base Shooting Victim Was Goofy, Churchgoing

Marine who was shot to death at a Virginia base was described as a warm-hearted country boy from the South who grew up in the Pentecostal church and even preached a few times.

Jacob Wooley, 23, of Mississippi, was killed on Thursday by Sgt. Eusebio Lopez at the Marine Corps Base Quantico in northern Virginia, military officials said. Lopez also shot 19-year-old Lance Cpl. Sara Castromata to death before he killed himself.

The three worked at a school that tests Marines who want to become officers, but officials have not released their relationship or a motive for the shooting. Their bodies were found in the Taylor Hall barracks, where those who work at the school live. The candidates for officer live elsewhere on base.

Tiffany Wood said she met Wooley when they were teens.

"I'm just so confused. Jacob had no enemies. He was such a sweetheart," she said.

Father kills son, self, During Custody

Father kills son, self, A man from the Centeral Pennsylvania Father of child shot and killed his 2-year-old son and wounded his estranged wife during a custody exchange before killing himself, authorities said.

Police said Kenneth Ayers also shot at his mother during the altercation Saturday morning at her home in a rural area about 20 miles southwest of State College.

Huntingdon County District Attorney George Zanic said Ayers, 52, was subject to a protection from abuse order filed by his wife but was permitted visits with his son, Michael.

Saturday's visit was to happen at his mother's home in Barree Township. But once at the home, Ayers got into an altercation with his estranged wife, Hollie Jo, and shot her in the legs and arm with a .40 caliber handgun before intentionally shooting his son, police said.

Kenneth Ayers placed the child's body in the back of his vehicle but the wounded woman retrieved the body before Ayers shot her again in the face, police said. He also fired at his mother but missed.

"Words can't describe the scene ... heartbreaking," Zanic told The (Altoona) Mirror outside the home.

Kenneth Ayers' body was found several hours later in his parked truck in a wooded area in Warriors Mark Township. Investigators said he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Hollie Jo Ayers was transported to a hospital and expected to survive, according to police.

State police Cpl. Daniel Sneath said investigators are trying to determine what led to the shooting and why Ayers was carrying a gun despite the protection order.Police will also seek an autopsy to determine whether Kenneth Ayers was under the influence drugs or alcohol.

Pauley Perrette ex-husband, Charged for violating

NCIS star Pauley Perrette's ex-husband has just been charged with violating her restraining order against him -- and now the guy faces up to a year and a half behind bars.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ, Francis "Coyote" Shivers has been charged with one count of violating a court order, and one count of probation violation. If convicted, he faces 18 months in jail.

Shivers is currently on probation after he was convicted of sending Pauley's lawyer harassing emails.

Pauley Perrette is an American actress, best known for playing Abby Sciuto on the U.S. TV series NCIS. She is also a published writer, a singer and civil rights advocate. Perrette also co-owns the "Donna Bell's Bake Shop" in Manhattan.

As we first reported, Shivers showed up last month at a Hollywood sushi joint where Pauley and her current fiance were having dinner -- and an argument broke out.

Shivers said it was all just a coincidence -- but prosecutors feel differently.

Controversial call hangs over Ohio State victory

Brian Spurlock/USA TODAY Sports

The spotlight was on Aaron Craft after Ohio State's last-second victory over Iowa State, not because of his cold-blooded game-winner, but because of a controversial charge he took late in the game that could have swung the game for his Buckeyes. With 1:15 remaining and Iowa State holding a one-point lead, Cyclones guard Will Clyburn drove to the basket, made contact with two Ohio State defenders, including Craft, and laid the ball off the glass for a tough basket.

Buzzer-beater eliminates Iowa State: Buckeyes advance

If the basket had counted, Iowa State would have been on the free throw line, up three points with 1:41 remaining. But officials believed Craft had set himself in a legal area before Clyburn released the ball. His heel was just above a restricted area under the basket and it looked like he had narrowly positioned himself to take the charge.

The Iowa State player was whistled for the foul, the basket was nullified and Ohio State gained possession. The Buckeyes tied the game seconds later, then won on Craft's three-pointer in the final second.

Analysts on CBS and across the Internet disagreed with the call. Jay Bilas called it a "failure." Greg Anthony, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley disputed the ruling on the court. John Adams, the national coordinator of officiating for the NCAA, admitted it was probably a missed call, but said it was so quick that it's hard to say for certain.

During the game's broadcast, the legitimacy of the call was less clear. Clark Kellogg and Jim Nantz praised Craft for raising his heel so that it didn't touch the restricted area under the basket, where charges can't be called. There were multiple problems with that statement.

TV Schedule: Sunday's games

First, if Craft's heel was still moving, then he wasn't properly set. That means it was a block and Clyburn should have been awarded the basket, plus one free throw.

Second, a defender standing over the restricted area is considered to be in the restricted area. The application of the rule isn't like a ball handler standing with his heels over the out of bounds area. If Craft's foot was above the semi-circle, then he can't take a charge. (The ruling is similar to how it's considered a touchdown if a football crosses the plane of the end zone, but not out of bounds if a ball crossed the plane of the sideline.)

It's a tough to call to make either way.

After the game, the NCAA national coordinator of men's basketball officiating, John Adams, gave his explanation.

"I spoke with the official, and he determined the defender established legal guarding position outside the restricted area prior to the offensive player leaving the floor to start his shot," Adams told reporters. "When asked, the official said he did not see the defender's foot over the restricted area line. By rule, this is not a reviewable play."

Clyburn, the player called for the charge, wasn't even sure what happened.

"I really can't see where he was," he said after the game. "I felt like it was a good play. I'm not sure if he got position or if he was there or not."

The problem, perhaps, isn't with the call, it's with the idea that college basketball rewards defensive players for sliding into position and standing still rather than playing defense.

Tampa Bay coach fired

Tampa Bay coach fired, Tampa Bay Lightning are a professional ice hockey team based in Tampa, Florida. They are members of the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League

Tampa Bay Lightning fired coach Guy Boucher on Sunday.

Assistants Martin Raymond and Dan Lacroix will share coaching responsibilities for Sunday night's game at Winnipeg.

"Guy has poured his heart and soul into the Lightning organization for these past three years and we appreciate all the work he has done," general manager Steve Yzerman said in a statement. "But ultimately I am not satisfied with the direction we are heading and I believe making a change today is in the best interest of our franchise."
Tampa Bay Team mates
Tampa Bay is next to last in the Eastern Conference with a 13-17-1 record. Boucher was hired as the Lightning's seventh coach on June 10, 2010.

Boucher's dismissal came one day after the Lightning fell behind by four goals in the first period of a 5-3 loss at Ottawa.

The Lightning appear headed toward missing the playoffs for the second consecutive season after reaching the Eastern Conference finals during Boucher's first year.

Tampa Bay entered this season with postseason aspirations after adding goalie Anders Lindback and defensemen Sami Salo and Matt Carle. Lindback and team captain Vincent Lecavalier have been among the players sidelined by injuries.

Boucher's hiring was Yzerman's first major move as GM. Boucher had only one year of professional coaching experience, none on hockey's highest level. But Yzerman was not deterred from making him the league's youngest coach, saying the 38-year-old had adapted to the players, personalities and level of play he encountered at every stage of his career.

Boucher was a junior league coach for three years before taking over the American Hockey League's Hamilton Bulldogs, Montreal's top minor league affiliate. He led Hamilton to the second-best record in the AHL then turned down a chance to coach the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Pauley Perrette ex-husband

Pauley Perrette ex-husband, Pauley Perrette is an American actress, best known for playing Abby Sciuto on the U.S. TV series NCIS. She is also a published writer, she plays a Goth forensic scientist on a hit TV show - and actress Pauley Perrette allegedly follows a dark script in real life, too.

Her ex-husband says he broke up with the 43-year-old NCIS star after she slept with the pizza deliveryman, according to a court document, the New York Post reports.

Now, he claims, she’s living the plot of an unsold film script she wrote and framing him with cops. He faces possible jail time this week for violating a restraining order.

Perrette has played Abby Sciuto on the CBS series since its debut in 2003 and rates as one of the most likable actresses in prime time.

But friends have testified about her off-screen antics, particularly toward ex-husband Francis "Coyote" Shivers. The couple married in 2000, separated in 2004 and divorced in 2006.

"She’s extremely extroverted, extremely intelligent and charming - but she’s wicked," Jason Fishbein, who says he was a close friend of Perrette, told The Post.

Fishbein described in court papers how the actress "possibly uses restraining orders as a method of harassment."

In 2005, Perrette sought a restraining order against Shivers, a musician and DJ. Her lawyer said that Perrette feared for her safety and that Shivers sent her frightening e-mails and "intercepts her private e-mails."

A judge issued the order based on a "history of emotional abuse."

Shivers claims in court papers that Perrette is living out her screenplay, titled Star Crazy, which outlines steps for vengeance - "stalk him," "schmooze police" and "get restraining order."

"For years, I’ve been saying that this was going to happen - in court documents, in police reports," Shivers told The Post. "And, finally, it has."

Shivers got into legal trouble in 2009 for violating the restraining order after sending numerous e-mails to Perrette’s lawyer, who called them "annoying electronic communication."

He was busted last April for violating the order again when he and Perrette ended up in the same LA sushi eatery - one he often tweeted about.

He was convicted last month and is facing up to a year in prison when he is sentenced on Wednesday.

Midwest snowstorm

Midwest snowstorm, Early spring snowstorm has forced the heavy cancellation of nearly 100 flights at Denver International Airport (DIA) and closed several roads Saturday as it moved eastward, dumping more than a foot of snow in some places.

The snow started falling around midnight in northeast Colorado and then moved into northwest Kansas and southwest Nebraska.

Ten to 15 inches of snow had fallen by Saturday afternoon north of Interstate 70 in northwest Kansas and northeast Colorado, with another 1 to 2 inches expected in the area, said Ryan Husted, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Goodland, Kan., where 15 inches of snow had fallen.

The storm also dropped up to 7 inches of snow in southwestern Nebraska before tapering off Saturday afternoon, said David Pearson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service near Omaha, Neb.

"But the wind is really blowing, so visibility in those areas is still going to be pretty low," Pearson said.

Husted said winds gusting at speeds of up to 45 mph were creating snow drifts of 2 to 3 feet in parts of Kansas, Colorado and Nebraska.

I-70 had been shut down Saturday from Denver to Colby, Kan., because of poor visibility. The northbound lanes of Interstate 25 also were closed south of Fort Collins, Colo., because of multiple accidents.

"It's a mess here," said Jerry Killingsworth, a National Weather Service meteorologist also based in Goodland, Kan. "Heavy, wet snow, tree limbs down."

At the Goodland 24/7 truck stop, truckers milled around. With roads in the area closed, they are "just waiting," said Samantha Lamb, the truck stop's assistant manager.

"Our hotel across the street from us is pretty full," Lamb said. "Our parking lot has a good 35, 40 trucks in it."

As the system moved eastward, it threatened to inconvenience fans attending the NCAA men's college basketball tournament in Kansas City.

Scott Blair, a meteorologist in Pleasant Hill, Mo., said light showers and drizzle began switching over to snow Saturday afternoon in Kansas City and western Missouri. The heaviest snowfall was expected overnight, with up to 6 inches forecast for the Kansas City metropolitan area.

"If people don't need to be out driving tomorrow that would certainly be recommended," he said.

Dan Gavitt, vice president of the NCAA men's basketball championships, said teams and officials already are onsite and that no game delays are anticipated.

Teen accidentally kills brother, 12 Years teen Dead

Teen accidentally kills brother, Teen has accidentally killed his brother was making news this weekend, as Fox WOGX News reported this Friday, March 22, that a 12-year-old Orlando, Fla. boy is dead after his 16-year-old brother accidentally shot him with a gun.

Under the headline, “Teen accidentally kills brother, police say”, the Orlando Sentinel adds that although the boy was quickly taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital, he was unable to be revived and was pronounced dead from the gunshot wound.

Local officials have deemed that the brother’s shooting was an accident, and the older teen is not expected to face any charges in the boy’s death.

"Detectives will be meeting at a later date with the State Attorneys Office to discuss the case and decide if there is any negligence," said Orlando Police Department spokesman Sgt. Jim Young. "The family is fully cooperating with the investigation; however, they are requesting privacy."

Unfortunately, this is not the first time that gun violence in the Orlando area has tragically struck youth this week. Fox News added that a Pine Hills boy, only four years old, is still in critical condition after he found a loaded gun and shot himself in the head this Wednesday morning.

Police are still investigating how the child came in contact with the gun. This disturbing news only seems to highlight the importance of keeping guns away from both the very young and teens to keep them safe from such accidents.

Prison Chief's Death Highlights Safety Concerns

The newest warden was sworn in Friday to oversee South Carolina's Lee Correctional Institution, a prison described by Gov. Nikki Haley as a dangerous place "housing the worst of the worst of our convicts."

It was a milestone in the career of Mike McCall, but the warden refused to let his wife accompany him to the ceremony.

"He didn't want anybody seeing the TV or the newspapers to know what she looks like," for fear she could be become a target, said Clark Newsom, spokesman for the South Carolina Department of Corrections. "It's the nature of the business. The average person doesn't realize how dangerous this can be."

The shooting death last week of Colorado's prison chief has focused attention on the danger faced by those who oversee the prisons housing the nation's convicts. Prison guards, wardens and correctional system administrators have been targeted in the past, often by convicts who had been freed after serving their sentence.

Quaid, wife reunite, Back Together Again

Dennis Quaid is an American actor known for his comedic and dramatic roles. First gaining widespread attention in the 1980s and his Kimberly Buffington-Quaid are back together despite signing divorce documents, The G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra actor - who filed for divorce from his wife of eight years Kimberly Buffington-Quaid in November just six weeks after she announced their legal separation and recently bought a new $3.1 million home for her and their five-year-old twins Thomas and Zoe - has reportedly decided to give their marriage another try despite the fact they both already signed their divorce papers.

According to gossip website TMZ, the couple recently reunited but it is too late for them to halt their divorce.

The paperwork is currently in the possession of a judge and there is no way of removing it from the courts system so the judgment will become final.

It is not known if the couple plans to remarry.

Former real estate agent Kimberly originally filed for divorce last March because she said the marriage had "become insupportable because of discord or conflict of personalities."

She later asked for their divorce to be put on hold in April 2012 to give them time to work on their marriage but then filed for a formal separation in October.

A source connected with the couple revealed the reason for the renewed split was that "Kimberly is fed up with Dennis' cheating and wants out of the marriage. He's not a good husband."

The 58-year-old actor recently purchased a property, which is located in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles beside Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Bill Cosby's homes, and the title is held in both Dennis and Kimberly's names but under the terms of their divorce settlement she and their children have exclusive occupancy of the house until they turn 18.

The agreement also conditionally allows Kimberly to stay longer if necessary.

The actor - who was previously married to actresses Meg Ryan and P.J. Soles - requested joint physical and legal custody of the twins and offered to pay spousal support in his divorce papers.

John Kerry urges Iraq to help stop Iranian arms shipments to Syria

The US has made clear to Iraq that it shouldn't allow Iran to use its airspace to ship weapons and fighters to Syria, secretary of state John Kerry told reporters Sunday during an unannounced trip to Baghdad.

Kerry's comments come as US lawmakers are calling for President Barack Obama to do more to stop the bloodshed in Syria, including possible airstrikes against Syrian president Bashar al-Assad's aircraft fleet. US officials say ongoing efforts to aid opposition groups in Syria have been undermined by Iran, which is using Iraqi airspace without objections by Iraq.

On Sunday, Kerry said Iraq's tacit approval of Iranian overflights left the American people "wondering how it is a partner".

"I made it very clear that for those of us who are engaged in an effort to see President Assad step down … anything that supports President Assad is problematic," Kerry said following a private discussion with Iraqi prime minister Nouri al-Maliki.

The Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, congressman Mike Rogers of Michigan, on Sunday called for a greater US presence in the Syrian conflict to prevent chemical and conventional weapons from falling into the wrong hands. He said the US should create a "safe zone" in northern Syria that would give the US more leverage with opposition forces.

"This doesn't mean the 101st Airborne Division and ships" are deployed, Rogers told CBS's Face the Nation. ''It means small groups with special capabilities reengaging the opposition so we can vet them, train them, equip them so they can be an effective fighting force."

Rogers' comments reflect an increasingly frustrated Congress that sees unrest in Syria as dangerous to US interests. Last week, senators Carl Levin and John McCain asked Obama in a letter to step up US military efforts in the region, including destroying Assad's aircraft using precision airstrikes.

The overflights in Iraq have long been a source of contention between the US and Iraq.

US officials say that in the absence of a complete ban on flights, the US would at least like the planes to land and be inspected in Iraq to ensure that they are carrying humanitarian supplies. Former secretary of state Hillary Clinton secured a pledge from Iraq to inspect the flights last year, but since then only two aircraft have been checked by Iraqi authorities, according to US officials.

One senior US official said the sheer number of overflights, which occur "close to daily", along with shipments trucked to Syria from Iran through Iraq, was inconsistent with claims they are only carrying humanitarian supplies. The official said it was in Iraq's interest to prevent the situation in Syria from deteriorating further, particularly as there are fears that al-Qaida-linked extremists may gain a foothold in the country as the Assad regime falters.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorised to speak publicly, said there are clear links between al-Qaida linked extremists operating in Syria and militants who are also carrying out terrorist attacks in Iraqi territory with increasing regularity.

In addition to al-Maliki, Kerry saw Iraqi parliament speaker parliament speaker Osama al-Nujaifi, a Sunni, whose faction is at odds with Maliki's Shiia. Kerry also spoke by phone with Massoud Barzani, the head of the Kurdish Regional Government based in Irbil to encourage the Kurds not go ahead with unilateral actions – especially involving oil, like a pipeline deal with Turkey.

Karl Rove gay marriage

Karl Rove gay marriage.  Karl Christian Rove Aged 62 is an American Republican political consultant and policy advisor. He was Senior Advisor and Deputy Chief of Staff during the George W. Bush administration said this morning on "This Week" that he can imagine the next Republican nominee for the White House supporting gay marriage.

"I could," Rove said on the "This Week" roundtable.

Rove's comments came days after Ohio Republican Sen. Rob Portman, whom Mitt Romney considered as a running mate in the 2012 election, announced that he had shifted his position and supported gay marriage. The vast majority of Republicans in Congress do not support same-sex marriage. Portman is the only sitting senator in the GOP to support same-sex marriage.

The Powerhouse Roundtable also addressed gun violence-prevention measures now being discussed in Congress. Rove said that universal background checks would not have stopped the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary that left 20 children dead in December.

"Let's be clear about this, this was prompted by the Sandy Hook murders. Those guns were legally purchased with a background check, " Rove said. "This would not have solved something like that. Let's be very careful about quickly trampling on the rights of people."

Former Obama 2012 campaign manager Jim Messina pushed back, arguing the importance of background checks.

"Look, 40 percent of all gun sales currently don't go through background checks. The background checks have stopped two million people from getting guns they shouldn't get," Messina said. "But we know there are loopholes all over the place. And Karl, just saying no, which is what the NRA and your party is doing right now, isn't moving us forward."

Toenails measure toxic exposure

Toenails measure toxic exposure, Neighborhood looks very Extremely normal single-family homes and apartment buildings packed together, dogs barking from postage-stamp-size lawns, parents hustling down narrow sidewalks to fetch their children from school.

But something with very dangerous potential lies below the surface, officials say.

The residents' toenails will provide confirmation.

A plume of hexavalent chromium, a metal used in industrial production that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention calls a "well-established carcinogen," has spread under Garfield, putting about one-tenth of the city's homes — about 600 structures and 3,600 residents — at risk.

The Environmental Protection Agency is about to start drilling on the spill site to determine how much chromium is pooled beneath and remove tainted soil. The agency is also testing the broader area to determine how it will be cleaned up. Now a group of scientists from New York University is working to assess how much chromium residents may have been exposed to.

Researchers will collect toenail clippings from city residents. The nails will be tested for traces of chromium. Because toenails grow slowly, it is possible to see how much chromium has accumulated in the body over the past 18 months or so, said Judith Zelikoff, a professor of environmental medicine at New York University.

Paris Hilton swatting, Fresh Victim

Paris Hilton swatting. Paris Whitney Hilton Aged 32 is an American heiress, socialite, television personality, businesswoman, fashion designer, entrepreneur, model, actress, producer, author and singer

Paris Hilton has been swatted according to a report from TMZ on March 23. The 32-year-old was the target of the latest swatting incident that has become a common problem for Hollywood. Swatting involves someone making a prank call to the police and getting them to arrive at a celebrity’s home by claiming a crime is in progress.

TMZ reports that sources have confirmed that Paris Hilton was swatted. Police arrived at her house and did not find any evidence of a crime. It appears that Paris was not at home because she has been tweeting from Miami. She now joins the list of swatting victims that includes Ashton Kutcher, Chris Brown, Clint Eastwood, Kris Kardashian and others.

Hilton has not issued a statement about becoming a swatting victim. Instead, she has been attending the Ultra Music Festival, tweeting about Miami and meeting the oldest DJ in the world. The Daily Mail reports on March 23 that Paris met Ziggy 420 who claims to be the oldest DJ in the world.

Despite being swatted, Paris Hilton does not seem to be concerned about the prank call or waste of police resources. On her official Twitter account, she posted about watching David Guetta at the Ultra Music Festival and proclaimed she loved his new single. Hilton also posted, “It’s never too late - never too late to start over, never too late to be happy.” Maybe this message is directed at her prank caller.

UCLA says it has not fired coach

Speculation about the job status of UCLA men's basketball coach Ben Howland has been rampant all season, and it climaxed Saturday night with reports of the school firing him after 10 seasons. But the talk and speculation remains just that, for now, according to the school.

Late Saturday UCLA athletics spokesman Nick Ammazzalorso released a statement that said, "Contrary to multiple media reports this evening, UCLA has not fired men's basketball coach Ben Howland."

Reports of Howland's dismissal had been published by Alex Kline on TheRecruitScoop.com, a Rivals.com web site, and discussed during CBS and its partner networks' coverage of the NCAA tournament.

Howland's departure from UCLA appeared like an inevitability after 11th-seeded Minnesota beat sixth-seeded UCLA by 20 points late Friday night at the Erwin Center in Austin, Tex.

By the standards at most schools, Howland's on-court performance at UCLA has been sterling. He reached three consecutive Final Fours between 2006 and 2008. He has more Final Four appearances than all of the other current Pac-12 coaches combined (one). He won at least 25 games in five of his 10 seasons. And UCLA is fresh off a Pac-12 regular season title this season.

This season, however, had it share of adversity from the start. A lengthy NCAA investigation shadowed star freshman Shabazz Muhammad's debut. An early-season loss to Cal Poly dampened expectations and heightened scrutiny. And even after UCLA won the league regular season title, it saw second-leading scorer Jordan Adams go down with a broken foot in the final moments of a Pac-12 tournament win against Arizona.

During a 10-minute interview with USA TODAY Sports and Sports Illustrated following the loss to Minnesota, Howland spoke at length about how proud he was of his players for persevering through adversity all season. And before Adams was hurt, Howland's optimism for the NCAA tournament soared.

"I thought the team was really close to reaching ceiling," Howland said. "We just beat Arizona for third straight time. And we were really on our way. I was really confident about our chances in the tournament."

After Adams was hurt, Howland said he was "very subdued" because he knew how significantly the injury could affect his team. And his worst basketball-related fears were realized in the Minnesota game, which will now be the final dubious chapter of a tenure that also included tremendous success.

Howland did not return a voicemail from USA TODAY Sports on Saturday.

Gonzaga shocked

Gonzaga shocked, Previously when Gonzaga had lost, we were only three weeks into 2013. That is no more.

No. 9-seeded Wichita State climbed back from an eight-point second half deficit to upset No. 1-seeded Gonzaga, 76-70, knocking off the first No. 1 seed of the tournament and advancing to the Sweet 16 in the process at EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah, Saturday night.

Wichita State used 50 shooting from the field, including 14-of-26 shooting from three-point range to erase that deficit and take the lead, 64-63, with 3:10 to play. That was made possible by three-pointers on back-to-back-to-back possessions over a three-minute span that ignited the Shockers’ offense.

Among those three-point shooters were Ron Baker and Cleanthony Early, both of whom were 4-of-6 from three-point range on the night. That impressive shooting night comes after shooting 2-of-20 as a team in the Round of 64 against Pittsburgh.

Gonzaga could not survive the upset despite grabbing 20 offensive rebounds on the night. Wichita State did a fine job of bothering big man and National Player of the Year candidate Kelly Olynyk, who needed 22 shots to score 26 points on the night. They also concentrated the offensive production in the hands of three players: Olynyk, Kevin Pangos, and Elias Harris. Those three combined for 81 percent of the team’s scoring.

Gonzaga becomes the third No. 1 seed in the past four years to lose in the Round of 32 and the first No. 1 seed to be eliminated from this 2013 NCAA tournament. And that comes after perhaps the shakiest performance by a No. 1 seed in the Round of 64, when No. 16-seed Southern ran the Bulldogs to the wire Thursday evening.

Joe Weider dies

Joe Weider dies, the scrawny kid who has represent himself with bodybuilding during the Great Depression and created an empire of muscle magazines, fitness equipment, doubtful dietary supplements and Olympic-style contests featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger, died on Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was 93. The cause was heart failure, said Charlotte Parker, his longtime publicist. Mr. Weider may not have been the 97-pound weakling of the comic books who got tired of having sand kicked in his face. But as a teenager in Montreal, he hated being roughed up by neighborhood hooligans, discovered bodybuilding in a magazine and bought into it for life. He developed a V-shaped torso with bulging biceps and abs like Michelangelo’s David, and was still muscular and jut-jawed in his 70s and 80s.

In the intervening decades, Mr. Weider (pronounced WEE-dur), who moved to the United States as a young man, founded many of the world’s most popular bodybuilding magazines, including Muscle and Fitness, Flex, Men’s Fitness and, for women, Shape. They had 25 million readers and were crammed with photos of greased bodybuilders and Hollywood stars like Sylvester Stallone, Cher and Mr. Schwarzenegger.

Riding waves of postwar fascination with bodybuilding, Mr. Weider and his brother Ben founded the International Federation of Body Builders, which sponsored the Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia contests and other competitions for men and women featuring gibbous thighs and sugar-loaf pectorals. Ben Weider, who was the federation president from 1946 to 2006, established affiliates in some 170 countries.

Former real estate agent Kimberly originally filed for divorce last March because she said the marriage had “become insupportable because of discord or conflict of personalities.”

Dennis Quaid and Kimberly Buffington-Quaid are allegedly back together even though a judge is ready to finalize their previously agreed-to divorce. But this is not the couple’s first ride on the divorce-go-round.

She later asked for their divorce to be put on hold in April 2012 to give them time to work on their marriage but then filed for a formal separation in October.

The 58-year-old actor recently purchased a property, which is located in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles beside Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Bill Cosby’s homes, and the title is held in both Dennis and Kimberly’s names but under the terms of their divorce settlement she and their children have exclusive occupancy of the house until they turn 18.

Weider, 93, passed away Saturday of heart failure  at his home in Los Angeles, according to a news release. The multimillion-dollar publishing empire he built included Muscle and Fitness, Flex, Shape, and Men’s Fitness magazines.

MORE ON JOE WEIDER: Joe Weider dies at 93; pioneer bodybuilder and publisher

"Joe didn’t just inspire my earliest dreams; he made them come true the day he invited me to move to America to pursue my bodybuilding career," Schwarzenegger said in a statement. "I will never forget his generosity."

Weider was born Nov. 20, 1920, in Montreal. He first dreamed of power as a young teenager living in a gang-infested ghetto there. When he was 13, he crafted crude dumbbells and then worked out until he was able to stand down bullies who beat him up.

He created the Mr. Olympia event in 1965.  Two years later, Weider discovered Schwarzenegger at a body-building contest in Europe.

He soon invited Schwarzenegger to move to California and funded the young bodybuilder's first apartment in Santa Monica, giving him enough money to make ends meet. Weider also orchestrated Schwarzenegger's first acting role in a TV movie.

Asked by the producers of "Hercules Goes Bananas" for a "a muscleman who could act a little," Weider pointed them to Schwarzenegger.

Schwarzenegger told The Times in 1989 that Weider pumped up his resume to get him the job, telling the producers that Schwarzenegger had done Shakespearean plays in Germany.

"It was all bull," Schwarzenegger admitted. "I didn't speak much English at all. We went to meet these guys and Joe said, 'Don't say anything. I'll do the talking.' "

While he had staunch supporters, Weider's critics complained about his outsized ego and bruising business style. Weider at times called himself the Jesus Christ, the Mahatma Gandhi and the Karl Marx of his field.

He studied the tactics of leaders who inspired the masses, including Winston Churchill, Moses, Benito Mussolini, Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler, and collected the original letters of men like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud.

"You think anybody says negative things about Jesus? About Moses?" Weider asked The Times during a 1989 interview. "You get a lot of atheists and devil worshipers that hate God. Why should I be loved by everybody?"

He is survived by his wife, Betty Weider.
