Facebook hashtags

Facebook hashtags, Facebook Inc is looking to improve its search and indexing capabilities by adding the hashtag symbol, one of the most recognizable features of its social networking rival Twitter, according to media reports. The hashtag, which appears as the # symbol, makes it easier for users to follow specific topics of conversation within the ever-changing stream of comments posted on Twitter. Users type the hashtag alongside a keyword - such as #election - at the end of a Tweet, making it easy to group comments on the same topic. Facebook could similarly organize the conversations that take place on its more than one billon member social network by incorporating hashtags, said The Wall Street Journal which first reported the news on Thursday citing anonymous sources, thought it noted that the feature wasn't being introduced imminently. Facebook declined to comment. Facebook introduced a revamped social search feature, dubbed Graph Search, in January. The search tool allows u

Baby falls eight stories

Baby falls eight stories, A New York woman holding her baby son plunged eight stories out of an apartment window to her death in an apparent suicide, but her child survived, authorities say. 45-year-old Cynthia Wachenheim was found on the street with her son, 10-month-old Keston, near her arms. The child was rushed to the hospital and is in critical but stable condition. Police say they discovered a seven-page suicide note under a bed in the apartment Wachenheim shared with her husband. Wachenheim said in the note she recognized what she was about to do was "evil" but she was concerned about how her child was developing, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the case, according to the Associated Press. It was unclear whether the baby, who neighbors said was an only child, had any mental or physical problems. A window to the West Harlem apartment was wide open, and there were no signs of struggle inside, police said. There were no safety bars on the apartm

Nevada pot legalization

Nevada pot legalization, With a legalization battle happening just over the Sierras in California, attitudes toward marijuana are changing in the West. An increasing number of people, especially among college-age adults, are in favor of decriminalizing the drug’s recreational use. If recreational cannabis use is legalized in Nevada, the result could be a new source of revenue for the state and decreased spending by authorities to prosecute and incarcerate users. Law enforcement officials in Nevada arrested more than 7,000 people on marijuana charges in 2007, according to statistics from the United States Drug Enforcement Agency. At an average cost to taxpayers of $11,500 per arrest, cutting that number could save hundreds of thousands, taking an edge off future state budget deficits that threaten funding for education and other services. More people in the United States are in favor of the legalization of recreational marijuana than ever, according to a Gallup poll conducted in Octobe

Stolen iPad pictures

One of the photos taken from Allan Engstrom's stolen iPad (Engstrom/Facebook) Stolen iPad pictures, Losing your iPad would be a source of anger and resentment for most people. But one Arkansas man describes his own stolen device as a “continuing fountain of entertainment,” thanks to the often bizarre pictures taken with the iPad that are posted to his iCloud photostream. "It's been a continuing fountain of entertainment for me,” Allen Engstram told KTHV. “It's just like I'll wake up one day and they'll be new pictures there and I'm like oh my gosh, she has no idea." Engstram says he lost the iPad on a flight from Phoenix to Denver. He assumed that was the end of the story until one day his son asked Engstram’s wife about a strange photo that appeared in the family’s photo stream. "He said mommy, who's this? And of course she said, I have no idea who that is. It showed up on my phone too," Engstram said. "

Steven Seagal Russia

Photograph: Alexei Nikolsky/AFP/Getty Images Vladimir Putin has reached back to Joseph Stalin's era for a plan to improve Russians' physical fitness, appearing with the film actor Steven Seagal at an event aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles among young people. In a meeting at a martial arts school on Moscow's outskirts, Putin called for physical education rooted in a Soviet-era system. "I think it would be quite appropriate to recall the positive experience of past decades when the so-called GTO, Ready for Labour and Defence, was in use in our country," he said. The GTO mass physical training programme was introduced in the 1930s under Stalin. "The revival of this system – in a new, modern format – could bring major benefits," Putin told government officials, schoolteachers and coaches. Snoop Dogg documentary

Snoop Dogg documentary, In hip-hop terms, using three names in four decades qualifies as a sign of remarkable consistency. So expectations were high when Snoop Lion, the rapper born Calvin Broadus who rose to fame in the gangsta rap 1990s as Snoop Doggy Dogg, emerged Thursday for the premiere of his new movie, album and identity. For “Reincarnated,” the documentary that made its domestic debut at the South by Southwest Film Festival, filmmakers followed Snoop to Jamaica, where he marinated in Rastafari culture. He emerged with the new name, plus a reggae album and a political agenda. Some of his views marked more of a departure than others. In the song “No Guns Allowed,” for example, he renounces gunplay. “Anti-bad things,” said the film’s director, Andy Capper, “whereas before he celebrated the bad things.” Dressed in gold-rimmed shades and a red track suit with orange stripes, Snoop did not strut the red carpet so much as hang out on it. He offered a loose handshake and spoke in bar

Obama fake mustache

Obama fake mustache, Obama in a fake mustache? He wishes. Barack Obama shared a "celebrity problem" in a recent interview. On March 14, ABC News reported that Obama said that he'd love to know what it's like to be a commoner... just to be a regular Joe visiting a foreign land. This statement comes ahead of the President's trip to Isreal, scheduled for next week. "Sometimes I have this fantasy that I can put on a disguise, wear a fake mustache and I can wander through Tel Aviv and go to a bar and have a conversation. I’d love to sit at a cafe and just hang out," Obama said. The Obama fake mustache idea is something that is intriguing to many people, especially those who are recognizable and can't be a "no one" in this world. When the president makes a statement like this, however, it comes with a-whole-lotta backlash. What do you make of Obama's fantasy? "The last time I was there as a senator, I still had the option of wandering t

Bill Gates on gay ban

Bill Gates on gay ban, The Boy Scouts gay ban has been a hot topic lately, and it seems many think it's time for the organization to change its stance on having gay leaders and members. As it turns out, Bill Gates' gay ban thoughts caught the attention of many during his March 14 chat in Politico's Playbook Cocktails video. Gates was a Boy Scout during his youth, and he says he learned a lot from his time in the organization. However, “Because it's 2013” Bill Gates says the gay ban should be lifted. He had no qualms about saying he thinks it is time for a change, as when asked if the ban should be lifted he said, “Absolutely.” The Boy Scouts have put off making a change or having an in-depth discussion on this issue again and again. While they do still have a lot of support for the ban, they are seeing increased pressure from many to make a change. Whether the Boy Scouts organization will lift the gay ban remains to be seen, but there are many who agree with Bill Gates

Kmart shark

Kmart shark, The white-tipped shark died March 6 after being shipped from New York to Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Times said. The shark was injected with adrenaline and received oxygen after it showed signs of stress. It was later removed from the pool and died that afternoon. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said it had sent a letter to Kmart asking it to stop using wild animals in ads, and a letter to the American Humane Association detailing an unnamed whistleblower's account of the death. The whistleblower worked on the commercial, PETA said. The signs of stress were observed when actors jumped in and out of the pool with the shark, said Lisa Lange, PETA senior vice president. The humane association, which is in charge of protecting animals during filming, shut down production an hour after the distress signs were seen. Messages left by The Associated Press for the association and Kmart, which is owned by Sears Holdings Corp., were not immediately returned. A Kmart

M.I.A. restraining order

M.I.A. restraining order, Rapper M.I.A. will not be missing in action any time soon. The performer has been banned from leaving the borough of Brooklyn with her son Ikhyd, courtesy of a court order. After reportedly threatening to take her four-year-old son Ikhyd to her native London,M.I.A.’s ex-boyfriend, Benjamin Bronfman, obtained a temporary restraining order against the rapper to prevent her from taking their son to the U.K.against his wishes. A King’s County court granted the order earlier this week. M.I.A. responded by taking to her Twitter account. On Wednesday she published a series of tweets accusing Bronfman and his family of attempting to separate her from her son. The rapper tweeted about her relationship with her mother, who raised her as a single parent, saying, “Every child needs the MOTHER, I GREW UP WITHOUT A DAD. If grew up without my mother I wouldn’t be here.” While the tweets were deleted from M.I.A.’s account minutes after being posted, the rapper has retweeted

Higgs boson found

Higgs boson found, Physicists who last summer triumphantly announced the discovery of a new particle but held back from saying what it was, declared on Thursday there was now little doubt it was the long-sought Higgs boson. Latest analysis of data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) particle accelerator, where the boson was spotted as a bump on a graph early in 2012, "strongly indicates" it is the Higgs, said CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research. Physicists believe the boson and its linked energy field were vital in the formation of the universe after the Big Bang 13.7 billion years ago by bringing flying particles together to make stars, planets and eventually humans - giving mass to matter, in the scientific jargon. The particle and the field, named for British physicist Peter Higgs who predicted their existence 50 years ago, are also the last major missing elements in what scientists call the Standard Model of how the cosmos works at the very basic level.

Some highlights: On what Nirvana had that other bands he played with at the time didn’t: ”They had songs. They had Kurt.” On  why Cobain’s dream for Nirvana came true: “It was honest, it was pure, it was real.” On success: “Guilt will destroy you as an artist.” On rating records and listening to guilty pleasures: ”Paging Pitchfork, we need you to define the value of a song? Who f***ing cares? Who’s to say what’s a good or what’s a bad voice?” In addition to giving the keynote speech and playing a gig tonight, Grohl will also be promoting his documentary “Sound City: Real to Reel.”

Bill Simmons suspended

Bill Simmons suspended, Yahoo Sports reported on March 14 that ESPN has suspended journalist Bill Simmons from Twitter for comments he made about the show "First Take." After an embarrassing back-and-forth between Richard Sherman and Skip Bayless, Simmons tweeted that it was "awful and embarrassing." He also said that Sherman did not win the argument because everyone lost, especially ESPN. ESPN has a social media policy against their writers that prohibits them from taking a stance against ESPN. Because Simmons said that ESPN was a loser in the segment, that is what got Bill Simmons suspended. The argument on "First Take" had Bayless asking Sherman if he was as good as other defensive backs in the NFL. Instead of defending his playing, Sherman took aim at Bayless and called out the ESPN personality for never accomplishing anything in his career. Sherman said he was one of the best in the NFL at his position and Bayless was not the best at his vocation. It

Pope pays hotel bill

Pope pays hotel bill, The Pope pays hotel bill became a topic of conversation on Thursday, March 14, and rightfully so. It’s not everyday that the Pope, on his very first official day on the job, makes it clear that he plans to be seen as being one with the people. In an attempt to shift the tone and image from Benedict XVI, Pope Francis’ first day as pontiff was quite, well, different. How different? Well, for starters, the Pope stopped by his own hotel to pay his bill. He then picked up his own luggage, as well. But wait, there’s more. According to Yahoo, here’s how the first day for Pope Francis broke down: Francis began his first day as pope making an early morning visit in a simple Vatican car to a Roman basilica dedicated to the Virgin Mary and prayed before an icon of the Madonna. He had told a crowd of some 100,000 people packed in rain-soaked St. Peter's Square just after his election that he intended to pray to the Madonna "that she may watch over all of R

300,000 new millionaires

300,000 new millionaires, The rising stock market has pushed America's millionaire population close to its all-time highs before the recession. According to data from Spectrem Group, the Chicago-based wealth research firm, there are now 8.99 million U.S. households whose net worth totals $1 million or more (not including primary residence). That's up from 8.6 million in 2011 and just short of the all-time record set in 2006, when the United States had 9.2 million millionaire households. (Read more: 'Wealth Effect' Driven More By Homes Than Stocks) The stock market's rise has been the biggest driver of millionaire creation. With this year's gains, Spectrem said, the United States may have already exceeded its all-time record. Most of the benefits from rising stocks have gone to the wealthy, since the top 10 percent of Americans own more than 80 percent of all stocks, according to research from Edward Wolff of New York University. But the recent stock surge has a

Four-winged bird

Four-winged Bird, First Birds Might Have Flown on Four Wings, Instead of two wings, the first birds might have used four feathered limbs to stay aloft, according to research published today in Science. Birdlike dinosaurs, such as Microraptor and Sinornithosaurus, are known to have had long, sturdy feathers on their hindlimbs. But until now, researchers were not sure whether the earliest birds had already abandoned this extra plumage when they emerged to take to the Cretaceous skies over 100 million years ago. Reported scientificamerican... The researchers, led by Xing Xu, a paleontologist at the Institute of Geology and Paleontology in Shandong, China, found evidence of feathers on the hindlimbs of 11 basal bird specimens (gathered from the Lower Cretaceous Jehol Group in China). On some of the individuals, these feathers appeared to be veined flight feathers that stood perpendicular to the leg bones, similar to those in the basal bird Archaeopteryx. One specimen, attributed to the Sa

Marco Rubio 'bigot': Opposing same gender marriage

Is Marco Rubio a ‘bigot?’ Some may think so based on his stance on gay marriage, but the potential 2016 presidential candidate is publicly denying any such claims. On Thursday, March 14, news broke that Rubio spoke at the Conservative Political Action Conference about two hot button topics—gay marriage and abortion. And because the Republican party is perceived by some as being close-minded on both issues, Rubio took the time to try and separate himself from others in the party that may be giving him a bad name. Rubio also made sure to say that while he may not agree with you on your beliefs towards gay marriage and abortion, he believes that two parties on opposing spectrum of these topics can agree to disagree in a polite, respectful manner. "In order to work together with people you disagree with, there has to be mutual respect," the Florida Republican told the annual, three-day conference in National Harbor, Md. "That means I respect people that disagree with

North Korea conducts drills

Kim Jong Un has supervised a live artillery drill amid heightened rhetoric against the United States and South Korea, North Korea’s state news agency says. KCNA did not mention when the drill took place, but said two artillery units on islands near a disputed sea border with South Korea had hit their targets, according to Reuters. North Korea has been threatening a nuclear war with the United States after it was targeted by the U.N. for sanctions over a long-range missile test. South Korean workers also have reported seeing North Korean soldiers wearing camouflage webbing this week. But observers doubt that North Korea could stage a nuclear attack on the U.S., Reuters reports.

NY suspect killed

Authorities say the suspect in the fatal shooting of four men in neighboring upstate New York villages was holed up in a small, cluttered room in an abandoned bar when he died in a shootout with police SWAT teams.  State police Superintendent Joseph D'Amico says 64-year-old Kurt Myers fired through a first-floor door after troopers and FBI agents entered around 8 a.m. Thursday, killing an FBI dog sent into the room. D'Amico says police returned fire, killing Myers. His death ended a nearly 19-hour standoff that began after police say he killed four men and wounded two others at a barber shop in Mohawk and a car care business in Herkimer. D'Amico says police still don't know why Myers went on the shooting rampage.

Pope Francis starts first full day as pontiff with prayer

Pope Francis put his humility on display during his first day as pontiff Thursday, stopping by his hotel to pick up his luggage and pay the bill himself in a decidedly different style of papacy than his tradition-minded predecessor, who tended to stay ensconced in the frescoed halls of the Vatican. The break from Benedict XVI's pontificate was evident even in Francis' wardrobe choices: He kept the simple pectoral cross of his days as bishop and eschewed the red cape that Benedict wore when he was presented to the world for the first time in 2005 - choosing instead the simple white cassock of the papacy. The difference in style was a sign of Francis' belief that the Catholic Church needs to be at one with the people it serves and not imposing its message on a society that often doesn't want to hear it, Francis' authorized biographer, Sergio Rubin, said in an interview Thursday with The Associated Press. "It seems to me for now what is certain is it's
