World of Tennis: It'll be game on next year with Olympics following Wimbledon

The All England Club is usually a haven of calm once the tournament apparatus has been dismantled, but that will not be the case next year.

Wimbledon 2012 ends on July 8 and 20 days later the Olympics tennis event begins, meaning some frantic activity to make sure that it is ready to host most of the same players again for the Games.

Race is on: With the Olympics following on from Wimbledon, the onus is getting the turf ready

Busiest of all will be groundsman Eddie Seaward, for whom preparing and maintaining the courts twice in one summer will be the crowning glory of his career, as he retires shortly afterwards.

The key is going to be laying down pre-germinated seeds already grown on site to spruce up those areas of the court most subject to wear and tear over the main fortnight.

Actually the courts seem to have worn especially well in 2011, and tests carried out over the last few summers suggest it will be possible to restore the surfaces to pristine condition for the one-off event.

Originally the plan was to use just eight arenas for matches and the rest for practice, but now it is likely that 15 will be employed.

The big rush is going to involve logistics like shifting out miles of cabling used by the various TV companies, and replacing most of it with the gear of the Olympic broadcasting operation.

An indication of how frenetic it is going to be is that UEFA request the run of Wembley for two weeks prior to staging a Champions League final there, which is just one match (admittedly a very big football match) at a fixed time.

The Olympic event is (wrongly in my view) very similar to a joint-sex Masters level tour event, except there will be mixed doubles.

Players will be able to wear what they wish and, heaven forbid, there will be signage around the Centre Court.

The Royal Box will be the domain of IOC grandees and sponsors. Wimbledon, but not as we know it.

Colourful language: Verdasco was rightly whacked in the pocket after verbal outburst

TIME TO GET REAL OVER RACKET ABUSE

The biggest fine incurred at Wimbledon this year was paid by Spanish star Fernando Verdasco, forking out $5,000 for shouting an audible obscenity, which must have been pretty loud and pretty obscene, not for reprinting in a family newspaper.

The offence for which players have most had their wallets lightened, however, is racket abuse, with 11 of them having to fork out between $500 and $1,500 over the course of The Championships.

While one does not wish to encourage anarchy on the courts it strikes me that this rule is outdated.

It also runs contrary to attempts to encourage players to be more expressive on court in an age when tennis is competing with other sports. Is it really so bad if players smash their rackets in frustration, and will this really corrupt the youth of a nation?

After all a tennis racket is a piece of welded metal, not a seal cub.

If a player cracks one in anger he is probably only hurting himself.

It is not to be confused with the abuse of a fellow player, or an official.

Time to get real about this.

Look, no hands: Robin Soderling bounces his racket in frustration

BRITS ENJOYING THE AMERICAN EVOLUTION

More than 100 young British women are on full scholarships to colleges or universities in the USA to play tennis.

There are also more than 60 young men from the UK in America combining the game with their further education.

Great Brit: Liam Broady

Once-vaunted US college tennis is on the up again, having slipped back from its status as a breeding ground for aspiring professionals.

There are two main reasons for this.

More players are struggling to make ends meet on the tour with prize money failing to grow at the lower end, and the physical demands of top-level tennis mean that few players of either sex are breaking through until college-leaving age of around 21.

It is therefore an attractive option for those who are unsure whether they have got what it takes to turn professional.

The opportunities are especially plentiful for women.

The person who knows most about this is British doubles No 2 Sarah Borwell, who has placed 45 girls into colleges and mentors a further 45.

She is at asksarah@lta.org.uk.

BRIT OF THE WEEK (AN ANDY MURRAY-FREE ZONE)

He slightly ran out of gas in the boys' final but another excellent effort from Liam Broady (featured in this column last week) suggests there is hope for the future beyond AM.
