West Brom continue to fly under the radar in the midlands

There is a very good reason why, out of all of the Midlands' clubs covered in this column, West Bromwich Albion do not receive their fair share of web-space.

When you compare the serenity of life at the Hawthorns compared to the variety of soap operas being played out everywhere else in the heartland of England, why should I praise the good when I can pick apart footballing wreckage elsewhere?

From Steve Morgan's doesn't-know-best appointment of Stale Solbakken and the quasi-comical goings-on in the boardroom at St Andrew's, to the bizarre managerial merry-go-round at the City Ground and Villa's continued ills, there has been little shortage of good material.

Going about their business: West Brom's success has been built on a solid defence and explosive attack

And look, I haven't even mentioned Coventry City....

While all of the above are the victims of appalling management or bad decisions, (or both) the Baggies continue to punch above their weight relative to the size of their club and the finances available.

I don't know whether West Brom owner Jeremy Peace laughed or cried in the club's London offices when he read that Aston Villa had posted losses of £17.7m in the last financial year - although I'm willing to bet that in in some quasi James Bond-villian type of way a wry smile crossed those lips.

And why shouldn't he be allowed that small moment of satisfaction? Peace is absolutely laughing all the way to the bank with the television revenues rocketing next season.

On the pitch, there is the saga of Peter Odemwingie - an episode which the player seems determined to drag out in public until the bitter end via social media. But that apart, it's been pretty much under control since the first day of the season last August when Liverpool's demise set the tone for some sparkling early-season form.

However, despite all the plaudits - and West Brom must be lauded to the rooftops for the way they have prospered in the last four seasons after Odemwingie added the missing piece to the jigsaw in front of goal - this summer will be their most difficult one for some time.

In typical Baggies-like fashion, they have headed off one or two thorny problems before they have really started to become big issues.

Handing the likes of James Morrison and Jonas Olsson long-term contracts has ensured that two stalwarts will see out their best and most productive years in the Black Country, truly becoming stars in stripes.

Gareth McAuley has also opened talks on a new deal. I would suspect that this will be concluded. It would be little short of madness for the amiable Northern Ireland international to not enjoy his twilight years in comfortable surroundings.

Fiasco: After Peter Odemwingie's deadline day antics and continued outbursts at the club for not picking him, it would be a big turn-up if he remained past the end of the season

Strength: Ben Foster has been a key part of their success, and has made himself available for England again

Ben Foster has been inspired and Liam Ridgewell is a far better performer at left-back than many people credit him for.

But there are issues which will need addressing.

True, 12 months ago, West Brom did not have a head coach. That was a possible crack in the dyke, but Steve Clarke saw appreciated that he needed to make but minor adjustments. I understand it was Clarke's influence that swung the deal for Romelu Lukaku.

If that's the case, then he's earned his cash on that deal alone but with Dan Ashworth having departed to pastures new, there are one or two areas that still need addressing.

Target men: At times this season Shane Long and Romelu Lukaku are been unplayable in West Brom's attack

While Claudio Yacob's understated presence has been a massive boon, it will be difficult for the Baggies to retain several key men.

For example, in terms of the signing of a striker in the Premier League, the year-long acquisition of Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea has been little short of sensational. It's little more than an outside chance that he will return.

If that's a long-shot, then it will take a minor miracle if the relationship between Peter Odemwingie and West Brom is to continue, despite the remaining year on the player's contract. It's simply gone too far now.

For me, Shane Long hasn't looked the same player since Alan Hutton almost broke him in two at Villa Park. Not the fault of the Ireland international, but he doesn't seem to have been without his problems since then.

Example: Youssouf Mulumbu has been a revelation again this season in the heart of their midfield

Markus Rosenberg simply has not prospered amid stiff competition for front places and there must be doubts he can cut it in the Premier League. Which leaves Marc-Antoine Fortune, a willing worker, but he too has struggled to make a significant impact.

All that adds up to a lack of goals. Toss in the long-term injury to Zoltan Gera - another area of concern that weakens the Baggies' squad strength still further - and also to that of Steven Reid who has also not been without his injury problems and the cuts appear deeper than first thought.

It must also be noted that Youssouf Mulumbu - excusing that moment of utter madness at Upton Park last week - has been performing at the level of the year before last in which he was certainly my Midlands' player-of-the-season.

In June, the Congo international will be entering the final year of his current contract. Talks are underway to extend that. It would be surprising if suitors are not banging the doors down following the final game of the season.

With areas of uncertainty over Ashworth, Odemwingie, Lukaku, Reid, Gera and Mulumbu there are clearly areas to address.

But as I write at this moment, there is a very good chance that the Hawthorns will be the only place within a 45-mile radius of Birmingham city centre to stage Premier League football.

Given the manner with which West Brom conduct their business, however, it would not be over-stating the point to assume that these matters may already be in hand.
