The Midlander: Why Wolverhampton Wanderers look set for relegation from the Championship

Steve Morgan doesn't need protests.

He doesn't need fans foaming at the mouth underneath Billy Wright's statue tomorrow night. He doesn't need to read banners criticising his Merseyside heritage.

It's really not the time.

Forum: Wolverhampton Wanderers owner Steve Morgan (centre) and the club's CEO Jez Moxey (second from left) spoke at a fans' Parliament on Wednesday night

I had to wonder at the wisdom of allowing Morgan to speak at a fans' parliament on Wednesday evening.

But, do you know what, I think it's done some good.

If by a man's words shall he be judged, then that mea culpa - for that's what it was - from Morgan was as honest as it gets.

Yes, it's my fault. Yes, I'm hurting. Yes, I've spent money. Yes, I've made mistakes. Yes, I'll go if that's what you want.

What else DO supporters want? (Apart from a winning team)

It would be pretty pointless now, venting fury ahead of a horribly difficult fixture against Watford tomorrow night.

Waving the white flag: Dean Saunders (right) is without a win in the eight games he has been in charge, picking up only four points

It would be destabilising and unhelpful. And what else would anyone want Morgan to say? What else can he say?

No, it's not time for supporter actions, it really is time for the players to do that. The only problem is, I'm not sure they can.

Honestly, as a group, I don't think they are very good.

In the 12 months since McCarthy's exit, we have seen a succession of players brought into the club.

But I see little by way of improvement. In fact, I'm bewildered by it all. In fairness, while McCarthy must be credited for the Premier League promotion, his recruitment was hit and miss.

And Slawomir Peszko? Razak Boukari? Eggert Jonsson? Georg Margreitter? Stefan Maierhofer?

The wage bill for this group is among the highest in the Championship. If not THE highest, it stands at a crippling £25m. By comparison, Peterborough United's stands at £3m.

Birmingham City's is a shade under £20m. (That's with Nikola Zigic trousering a whopping £3m-a-year too.)

Going down? Wolves currently sit in the relegation zone of the Championship and are winless since December 21st, a run of 11 league matches

In that respect, the frustration of Molineux chief executive Jez Moxey is easy to understand.

He writes the cheques. Has indulged several managers and can see that the likes of Peterborough are within touching distance of Wolves.

'The players must show a fierce commitment to the job at hand,' he wrote in the matchday programme for the Cardiff game, 'they must be determined to get themselves out of this position.

'It's now about proving that and showing what whatever happens to them this summer it happens with Wolves still a Championship club, not with them having the mark of a second successive relegation on their CVs.'

In a way, Moxey, like Saunders, is caught in the middle.

Clueless: Former boss Stale Solbakken (centre) was sacked after just 30 matches and six months in charge

SAUNDERS' RECORD AT MOLINEUX

January 11th: Wolves 1-1 Blackburn

19th: Sheff Wed 0-0 Wolves

26th: Wolves 1-2 Blackpool

31st: Leicester 2-1 Wolves

February 9th: Wolves 2-2 Leeds United

16th: Derby 0-0 Wolves

19th: Barnsley 2-1 Wolves

24th: Wolves 1-2 Cardiff

Played: 8

Won: 0

Drawn: 4

Lost: 4

Goals for: 7

Goals against: 11

Points: 4

Win matches and the 'Early Bird season-ticket' isn't mentioned. Lose and whatever the message, he's beaten around the head with it.

One of the reasons that Swansea City have enjoyed such success is that they have thought about what they want to do and how they are going to do it.

There wasn't any panic when manager Brendan Rodgers left for Liverpool last summer. They sourced a replacement almost immediately.

The inference from chairman Huw Jenkins' interview at the weekend was that players are signed to fit into a specific plan.

The problem is, with such a high turnover of managers, each with a different 'plan,' Wolves have found it difficult to find any continuity.

Consequently, they have found it difficult to shift under-performing players and easy to bring in others on a high salary.

Morgan wouldn't run his construction business along such knee-jerk lines as the decisions that were taken over his manager and players.

He wouldn't just point at a field and say: 'I know, we'll build a few houses there,' should the fancy take him.

He would have to take into consideration the infrastructure, the surroundings, the land cost, the build cost, the sale price - a whole host of different and competing factors.

Wage problem: Club captain Karl Henry (left) is one of a massive 33 players the club has on it's wage bill, which is among the highest in the Championship

I'm looking down the squad list on the back of the programme from the Cardiff match and there are 33 names on it...33!

Where is the planning? Well, it seems to have flown out of the window along with the confidence, sparkle and general determination of the first-team squad.

So, what to do?

When you are in a hole, do you keep digging? Do you keep spending money?

Let's examine the fall-out, should Wolves suffer relegation to League One.

Experimentation: Saunders' move to five at the back lasted only until half-time in the 2-1 defeat to Cardiff

Players might be on 'flex-down' contracts when the club slipped out of the Premier League. It's doubtful those same reductions apply if Wolves fall further - hence Morgan's words of warning if they do.

Revenue from television is slashed. According to figures I elicited from Coventry City chief  executive Tim Fisher a few weeks ago, income falls from £4m to a few hundred thousand pounds.

It is entirely possible that Wolves will end up giving away a few assets, in order to shift them from the wage bill. Indeed, they may end up even paying them to go.

Hit and miss: Ex-boss Mick McCarthy (right) was hit and miss with his signings, but there has been no sign of improvement since he left

So what's the likely cost? Possibly an eight-figure sum.

Against this, Saunders probably needs two or three additional faces for the last ten weeks of the season to improve the club's survival hopes.

Is a fresh face or two going to make a difference? I think it might.

It's unpalatable when the club has such an extensive rota to call on to suggest such a course of action, but 33 players have so far proved that staying in the Championship is beyond them.

So, Mr Morgan, what's it to be?
