Steve Finn could break all bowling records - James Anderson

What Steve Finn could achieve is nothing short of frightening. He is so good at just 23 and, with luck over form and fitness, has so many years at the top ahead of him that he could not only set bowling benchmarks for England but seriously threaten world records as well.

During his spell in Auckland yesterday, international class batsmen appeared scared of him and he is the closest we have to one of the great West Indies pacemen of the Eighties who terrorised batsmen.

I’ve only seen two other England bowlers carry that sort of menace: Freddie Flintoff at his peak and, for 18 months or so when he was rated the world No 1, Steve Harmison.

But where Harmy and Fred were of their time, Finn will benefit from all the available science and support to help him get the most from his talent, and that could help him go to another level.

The ECB are determined to do all they can, through rotation and careful management, to make sure he plays for as long as possible, recognising just what an asset he could be for years to come.

And if his story does go the way we all hope, he may well look back on the controversy over him kicking the stumps in delivery stride as a blessing in disguise.

RECORD BREAKER

I was proud to set the new England wickets record in the first ODI and almost as happy to get a drink out of Sir Ian Botham for overtaking his total (only one, mind). He said he’d buy me a beer if I beat his Test record and that he would love me to do  it. Knowing Ian,  I bet he really means it, too.

I don’t agree with the way the issue has been handled, the latest development being the introduction of ‘Finn’s Law’, which will make a brush with the stumps a no-ball, not a dead-ball.

Steve is certainly not the first bowler to do this. It was only after South Africa captain Graeme Smith started making a fuss about it during the series last summer that things have got out of hand and I’m not convinced he wasn’t doing it just to try to get under Finny’s skin.

In the wickets: Finn can break all records, according to James Anderson

But the need to avoid future problems has led to Steve making small but significant changes in his bowling action that, at first sight, have made him a bigger threat.

A new, shorter run-up means his action is more efficient, he is getting even more bounce and I think he may actually have gained pace.

He has it in him to become the most dangerous bowler on the planet.

TRICK SHOT? THE JOKE IS ON YOU, SWANNY

You may be aware of Graeme Swann’s trick golf shot that went badly wrong last week. We were playing at the beautiful Cape Kidnapper course and standing on a tee overlooking the ocean when he got carried away, grabbed my new Ping driver and said: ‘Watch this, this will be funny. I’ll hit one into the sea.’

In the event, the clubhead went further than the ball and it certainly made a bigger splash, but whereas Swanny claimed he’d hit it out of the screws I have photographic evidence which casts serious doubt on his version.

The picture shows the moment of impact between ball and club and the exact point of contact: a quarter of the way up the shaft. Fore!
