Sinkhole ballpark: Rangers practice stopped due to sinkhole at Texas Rangers Ballpark Tuesday afternoon in Arlington, Texas. USA Today reports June 11 that a busted pipe caused a sinkhole behind the pitcher's mound to form. Batting practice for the Rangers and Cleveland Indians was canceled so the ballpark sinkhole could get taken care of.
The sinkhole at Texas Rangers Ballpark and led Grounds staff had to dig over three feet into the ground in order to fix the pipe that is used to water the infield. One of the workers was seen waist deep once he was down in the ballpark sinkhole. The repair was finished and grass put back into place an hour before the game was scheduled to begin. The sinkhole at the Rangers ballpark happened two-and-a-half hours before the game was to begin. As maintenance worked on the sinkhole, both teams went to an indoor batting cage for practice.
The Indians were on an eight-game losing streak along with 12 losses in a series. Cleveland manager Terry Francona jokingly talked about creating a sinkhole on purpose. The ground staff dug over three feet into the ground to mend the sinkhole used to water the infield.
The sinkhole occurred two-and-a-half hours before the starting of the game. One of the workers went down in the ballpark sinkhole. As the repair work got over, the workers placed the grass into place. Reportedly, the work of mending the sinkhole finished just an hour before the beginning of the game. During the maintenance, both the teams practiced in the indoor batting cage.
Quoting Francona, the MSN Fox Sports mentioned, "I didn't do it. We're not there yet. We're frustrated, but we're not there." The field at the Rangers Ballpark is prone to problems as two weeks ago Arizona vs Texas match was also postponed due to unplayable field conditions.
