Geismar explosion: State authorities said that at least one person was killed and dozens were injured in an explosion at a chemical plant in Geismar. Finance reported this Thursday, June 13, that a massive explosion and subsequent fire erupted at a Geismar, Louisiana, chemical plant earlier this morning.
The explosion at the Geismar location occurred at the Williams Olefins plant. The plant itself produces over 90 million pounds of propylene every single year, as well as an additional 1.3 billion pounds of ethylene. After the initial explosion, noted the report, some areas of the plant also caught fire, spreading quickly and leading to a full evacuation.
Although no deaths from the giant Geismar explosion have been reported yet, several injury reports are coming in. Highways close to the plant have been closed by state officials.
