What really happened at the White House Correspondents' Dinner

TV funnyman Tracy Morgan and veteran journalist Geraldo Rivera struck up an unlikely friendship at Saturday's White House Correspondents' Dinner, bonding over their shared memories of growing up in Brooklyn.

The 30 Rock actor later tweeted about meeting the longtime television host and called Rivera 'my man fifty grand.'

Rivera also told New York magazine that they discussed how Morgan’s father died of AIDS when the comedian was still a teenager.

Their friendship was just one of many odd pairings at the annual dinner, where Washington D.C.'s community of journalists, politicians, and insiders gather with celebrities for a star-studded bash.

Another unusual pairing was Callista Gingrich, the wife of former Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich, seen chatting with a member of the reality show, Duck Dynasty.

The evening's emcee, late night comedy host Conan O'Brien, said how terrified he was of following President Obama's side-splitting routine.

'It’s a very weird thing to have the leader of the free world and the coolest guy in the room do a solid 25 minutes of pure laughs and then touch us all at the end with his comments and then to say: Now we need a comedian,' O'Brien told New York magazine.

'So I was thinking, like, well there’s no need for me. But I’m here and I’ve got good jokes, so let’s go.'
