The evidence is overwhelming': Court rules two men 'to blame' for Omagh bomb atrocity which killed 29

Two Irish republicans were today found liable for a second time for the Omagh bomb that killed 29 people.The landmark civil action against Colm Murphy and Seamus Daly was taken by relatives of some victims.The pair were re-tried after they successfully appealed a finding of liability in the first case at Belfast High Court.But the second action ended in the same outcome at the same court as judge John Gillen ruled that both were responsible for the 1998 Real IRA atrocity – whose victims included a woman pregnant with twins.Neither was in court to hear the judge say the evidence against them was “overwhelming”.

He went on: “Even 15 years on, nothing can dilute the pulsing horror of this crime, the wickedness of its perpetrators and the grief of those who have to bear its consequences.”No one has been criminally convicted of the Co Tyrone town car bombing that also injured more than 200 in August 1998.But Murphy, Daly, Real IRA chief Michael McKevitt and Liam Campbell were ordered to pay £1.6million damages after the 2009 civil action.McKevitt, serving 20 years across the border in Ireland for directing terrorism, and Campbell failed to alter the ruling they were to blame.They are seeking to have the case heard in the European Court of Human Rights.
