Royal Ascot to reduce numbers of fans - Captain's Log

The numbers allowed in the Grandstand at Royal Ascot in June will once again be reduced as the track strive to improve conditions for racegoers at the popular but congested fixture.

Course officials, who started the reduction in numbers last summer, have planned to further trim crowd numbers to make the cumulative reduction between 2011 and 2013 of 5,000 – a 20 per cent fall.

The aim is to improve the experience of the 20,000 left in the main grandstand.

Big occasion: Royal Ascot takes place in June and thousands attend

Ascot spokesman Nick Smith said: 'We have finished with number chasing. It doesn’t matter whether we have 300,000 or 320,000 at the royal meeting. We no longer regard those types of figures as an indication of how successful the meeting is.

‘It is more important to build a loyal customer base and provide them with the best possible facilities.’

Close to 80,000 are attracted across the enclosures at the Royal Meeting on the Saturday of the five-day fixture and reductions in the grandstand numbers will be countered by trying to attract increased numbers to both the Pavillion Club and Furlong Club, the latter being a hospitality facility close to the furlong pole. There will also be increased emphasis on making the Heath enclosure on the inside of the track more attractive.

Facilities, up until now fairly limited, will be enhanced with gazebos erected and for the first time Heath Enclosure tickets will be sold in advance.

Meanwhile, Smith has just embarked on his annual worldwide tour aimed at trying to lure the cream of international talent to the royal meeting.

Starting in New Orleans, Smith will take in Gulfstream Park, where he hopes to see No 1 Royal Ascot target – 2011 Kentucky Derby winner and 2012 Breeders’ Cup Mile runner-up Animal Kingdom and his English trainer Graham Motion -   before heading to Japan and ultimately Australia in time for Black Caviar’s comeback run in the Lightening Stakes at  Flemington on February 16, a race the Aussie mare will be trying to win for a third consecutive year.

Walsh to have TV duties in Festival build-up

The talents of Ruby Walsh as a jockey, especially at the Cheltenham Festival, are well known to everyone but the build-up to the big meeting will see the jockey demonstrate another talent – that of TV interviewer.

The Captain has heard that Walsh has been dispatched by dedicated horse racing channel Racing UK to be the man with the microphone throwing the questions at his main supplier of rides in Ireland – trainer Willie Mullins.

Passage to India for commentator McGrath

Aussie commentator Jim McGrath has called races all over the world but he will break new ground this weekend. The man, who called the horses for the now defunct BBC TV terrestrial racing coverage, will be in Mumbai to commentate on the Indian Derby.

The group one race at the Mahalaxmi racecourse is the most valuable event in the Indian sporting calendar.

Kent trainer John Best has recruited a new assistant for the coming Flat campaign in David Menuisier.

Menuisier was assistant to John Dunlop for six years before he retired at the end of last season. His international experience also includes spells with US trainer Richard Mandella at Santa Anita in California.
