Real men eat quiche and fearlessly remove spiders: What women really look for in their men

Chaps, if you want to convince your other half you’re a ‘real man’, there’s an easy way to do it. Get rid of a spider for her.

Fifty-two per cent of women say a real man shouldn’t be scared of spiders. But it seems chaps aren’t quite up to the challenge – only 10 per cent think the same.

In a survey of 2,000 people to find their definition of a ‘real man’, it was one of the few areas where the genders were split.

Loving: Women want a real man to cook, remove spiders and use a washing machine

Men can forget the stereotypical belief that women are looking for a good looking mate with a healthy bank balance and a big car.

They want their men to eat quiche, know how to cook it and do domestic chores, according to a survey of 2,000 women.

It highlights the differences between what men think a 'new man' is - and what women think.

Tempting: Women want men to eat quiche and to be able to cook it

As far as women are concerned, he should have a sense of tradition and an understanding of what being a gentleman is all about, according to research by stain removal experts Dr Beckmann.

According to British blokes a real man almost certainly supports his local football team (35 per cent ), earns more than his girlfriend or wife (39 per cent) and over half believe he owns a car.

But, more surprising than these stereotypes, almost five in ten men also agree with the women that a real man should be able to cook (46 per cent), know how to wash clothes (41 per cent) and perform domestic duties like vacuuming the house (54 per cent) and picking up the children from school (53 per cent).

Don't be frightened: Women expect real men to fearlessly remove spiders and be brave

Men were, however, less united when it came to their opinion on the fear of spiders. Just one in ten of British blokes believe a real man needs to show no fear of spiders, while just over half (52 per cent) of women insist a real man definitely wouldn't bat an eyelid at a spider.

Women were certain that a real man must be brave (64 per cent), be a gent (53 per cent) and always put their lady first (46 per cent).

But they also want a real man to be able to cook (54 per cent), use a washing machine (42 per cent) and be happy to carry out domestic chores like vacuuming the house, dusting, washing up dinner plates and doing the school run. (57 per cent).

Susan Fermor from Dr Beckmann said: 'We thought there may be a real distinction between what men and women believe constitutes a 'real man' in 2013 but were surprised to discover that, in many ways, both sexes have very similar feelings for what makes a real man.

'A real man has to be a man but also know and act upon his domestic responsibilities, especially when he is a father.

'It is interesting that women place more emphasis on men not being scared of spiders than men themselves - but maybe women have a hidden agenda there.

'Also, the survey showed us that women also expect men to know how to separate their colours from their whites when it comes to washing clothes in a washing machine - that's pretty advanced stuff as far as many men are concerned but, according to the ladies, something a real man wouldn't be scared of.'
