Now that's what I call a lifestyle coach! One reader lets the bus do the work on a US tour

A reader writes... Michael Nutt, 73, from Northwood, Middlesex, is retired from Government service.

He travelled on a Cosmos 11-day New England In The Fall tour hadn't been on a coach tour for 44 years, but decided to take this trip because it is all organised for you – you don't have to worry about getting between destinations and you get to see so much on the one holiday.

Falling for New England: In autumn, this beautiful area of America is a riot of colour

Having looked at four travel brochures, I thought the Cosmos one offered the best value and a good itinerary. I like visiting cities, particularly in the US. I find them really interesting and my last big trip a couple of years was to San Antonio, Austin and Houston, all in Texas.

I chose this trip because of the locations featured and the number of States visited. Of course, I have also read about the wonderful autumn foliage in New England, too, and was looking forward to seeing that.

On tour: Michael Nutt booked the trip as he loved the variety it offered

There were 28 of us on the tour, 23 from the UK, four from the US and one from Israel, and we were for the most part retired and travelling with spouses or friends.

I have a number of favourite moments. When I was last in New York, some 26 years ago, I had only been on the periphery of Central Park but this time I did a grand tour. It's a wonderful place.

Plymouth, Massachusetts, is a beautiful seaside town very near to Plymouth Rock, where the Pilgrim Fathers landed in the Mayflower in 1620. We visited Mayflower II, a reproduction of the original ship which was very interesting.

Plimoth Plantation is a living history museum where the guides were dressed like the original 17th Century residents of the colony, and accommodation reflected that period.

We went on a great whalewatching cruise, too, in search of humpback and finback whales, dolphins and other marine mammals and birds.

The boat, accompanied by a local marine biologist, travelled 25 miles into the ocean and we saw a number of whales. Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, was a gem of a town by Lake Winnipesaukee. The local college with its garden and lake view was something not to be missed.

We took a boat trip across the water and it was really exhilarating sitting on deck with 45mph winds blowing. Bath, also in New Hampshire, was another picturesque and quaint town, with three covered bridges and a pretty stream.

It also has The Brick Store, built in 1824 and the oldest continuously running general store in America. At an old non-conformist church there I went downstairs to give a donation and there was a lunch being held for senior citizens – I was the right age to join them!

Another memorable moment was the visit to the New Hampshire Military Service Monument, also in Bath, dedicated to all the local dead of conflicts including the Revolutionary War, the First and Second World Wars and Vietnam. It was all very moving.

And, of course, we all marvelled at New England's wonderful show of birch, oak and maple leaves in rich yellows, browns, oranges and reds. Many people on the coach had come on this trip specifically to see this, and it lived up to all expectations.

I thought our hotels, which included chains such as Holiday Inn, Radisson and Best Western, were of a very good standard. The rooms were large and comfortable and the staff were efficient. On several occasions we were given a glass of wine on arrival.

The coach was very comfortable with plenty of space and legroom. The trip was really interesting. I liked the landscapes and the lakes as well as the small towns. The people on the tour were a great crowd, and it is unlikely you could have picked such interesting places without some knowledge of the area.

Our American guide was insightful, helpful and exceptionally conscientious, too. I'd give the holiday nine out of ten, and would have no hesitation in booking another with Cosmos.
