Paolo Di Canio does things differently.

So it should be no surprise that he has called his final pre-match press conference of the season five days before the match.

You fear for anyone caught smiling, or showing even just the slightest sign of delight round the training ground today after Wigan’s defeat at Arsenal last night, which confirmed Sunderland’s Barclays Premier League status.

Staying up: Paolo Di Canio hasn't given up his wild celebrations when Sunderland find the net

There may be people within the fabric of the club whose jobs depended on top flight football who were unable to hide their relief, but Di Canio will feel frustrated his team have limped over the line and relied on Wigan’s demise to stay up.

Last week Di Canio could not hide his frustration that unidentified people had celebrated Wigan’s costly home defeat to Swansea. In their defence, we’re all getting used to the new manager’s standards and complex philosophies.

Flexing his iron fist, which he did again after the unconvincing draw with Southampton, the head coach indicated changes must come for Sunderland to move in the direction he wants.

Enthusiasm: His exuberance has often got him into trouble, and he will need to curb this in the Premier League

Today, he gets in first to reveal his plans for the future and his hopes for rebuilding the club. He wants to rid the club of its `dead environment’ and the `negative mentality’ and bring in his own men. He will be hoping owner Ellis Short is listening.

His transfer policy at Swindon Town involved a lot of revolving doors. Like many Premier League clubs, as Martin O’Neill discovered, Sunderland are not in a position to release and sign players like some glorified Fantasy League game.

Di Canio can also unravel the mystery of Sunderland’s relegation battle but give an insight into his plans for the future now safety is guaranteed.

In his path stands a fragile squad which has won eight points in six games, and failed to build on the momentum instilled in the astonishing wins over Newcastle and Everton which were hard to see coming under O’Neill. Would they have won those eight points?

Improvements: Despite getting a point against Southampton, Sunderland were rather disappointing

That Di Canio made the desired impact Short gambled on cannot be denied. The players took instantly to his methods and his hands-on approach. The cancellation of days off and the Tuesday and Thursday lunchtime clubs were also embraced.

But once that initial impact waned, and Sunderland started to run out of players, so they ran out of luck and wins.

The two home performances against Stoke and Southampton were unsatisfactory and failed to resolve the issue of relegation.

Now however, Di Canio starts to plan for the future, and for his first full Premier League season. Who he takes with him will depend on the players who have played by all his rules over the last two months, and those who have managed to perform in an under-achieving team.

Targets: Sunderland fans will expect more next season when Di Canio gets to make a charge from the start

Prepare for a bumpy ride Sunderland fans, prepare for the exit door (only Bramble and Kilgallon are out of contract but that may not be a guarantee of a future for others) and prepare for some new arrivals.

A new dawn is breaking at Sunderland. Paolo di Canio knows it. Now he wants to control it.
