Model of Richard III's head to go on UK tour (including one spot he might not be keen to revisit...)

A model of King Richard III’s head is to go on a tour of the UK, making stops at Bosworth battlefield and the British Museum in London

The facial reconstruction was created using a special 3D printing technique based on Richard’s skeleton, which was discovered in a car park in Leicester last year.

Man behind the myth: The face of King Richard III was reconstructed from 3D scans of his skull

Archaeologists discovered the body of King Richard III near the city's Greyfriars church following a search instigated by Philippa Langley, a member of the Richard III Society.

Richard was killed at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 but his grave was only rediscovered last August.

In February it was revealed that the remains were "beyond reasonable doubt" those of the last Plantagenet king after DNA analysis of the skeleton matched that of Richard's living descendants.

The model of the king's head was commissioned by the Richard III Society and made by Professor Caroline Wilkinson and the forensic art team at the University of Dundee.

Scientists used a 3D replication process called 'stereolithography' to create the king's facial structure. The final head was painted and textured with glass eyes and a wig, using portraits of the king as reference, to create 'a realistic and regal appearance'.

The 'calm and apparently thoughtful' face is in contrast to the many portrayals of Richard III, showing contorted facial and bodily features some say were created for political reasons following his death.

Solving the puzzle: To make the model reconstruction or Richard's head, forensic experts took a 3D scan of his skull and used pictures of Richard painted after his death to determine eye colour and hair style

Ms Langley said: "It doesn't look like the face of a tyrant. I'm sorry but it doesn't. He's very handsome. It's like you could just talk to him, have a conversation with him right now.

"Seeing a true likeness of England's last Plantagenet and warrior king meant, for me, finally coming face-to-face with the man I'd invested four years searching for."

The head went on display to the public at Leicester’s Guildhall on Saturday and will visit Bosworth Battlefield, Yorkshire and the British Museum in London before returning to Leicester in the spring of 2014.

It will then go on permanent display at the city's new Richard III visitor centre next to the grave site.

Tourist attraction: The model will be on display at Leicester's Guildhall before it begins its tour of the UK

The unveiling of the model kicked off a summer of Richard III-themed events in Leicester, which will include talks by archaeologists, guided tours of the city and displays of armour and weaponry that would have been used during the Battle of Bosworth.

Leicester City Mayor Peter Soulsby said: "Leicester is one of the oldest cities in the UK, and King Richard's remarkable story is a fantastic addition to what is already a long, colourful history.

"The arrival of the replica head, which will start its tour of English cities in Leicester, is a real feather in our caps, and this season of Richard III-themed activities and events will really help bring to life the sights, sounds and stories of medieval Leicester.

"I am delighted that will be on display in Leicester. The temporary exhibition at the Guildhall has already proved enormously popular, and the addition of the head will no doubt attract many more visitors.”

University of Leicester Archaeological Services have now applied to Leicester City Council for permission to extend their dig to discover more about the Greyfriars church where King Richard III was buried.
