An exotic cast including Jose Mourinho’s agent, Pep Guardiola’s brother, Roman Abramovich and David Beckham’s nemesis are working on what could be the major transfer deal of the summer — bringing Liverpool pain as Chelsea gain.

Chelsea want to buy one of the world’s most prolific strikers, Radamel Falcao, from Atletico Madrid. The Spanish club lie second in La Liga, just ahead of Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid.

Atletico are virtually certain to qualify for next season’s Champions League. The club’s directors are planning to cash in on Colombia international Falcao at peak value and replace him with Liverpool’s Luis Suarez.

On the move? Chelsea's swoop for Radamel Facao (left) could see Luis Suarez moving to replace him at Atletico Madrid

‘We won’t be making firm approaches until May but our objectives are absolutely clear,’ says an Atletico source.

‘We’ll be back at the top level in Europe and we’re not going to be short of quality when we get there.’

Informal talks involving Falcao’s representative Jorge Mendes — also agent to Mourinho — are under way about a potential roundabout of moves.

Manchester City are also interested in Falcao, valued by his club at around £43million. But Chelsea are front-runners because Atletico want to make a permanent signing of Chelsea’s Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who is on loan at the club.

Trump card: Thibaut Courtois, who is highly rated at Chelsea, is wanted on a permanent deal by Atletico

Courtois is one of 22 Chelsea players on loan across seven countries and keeping tabs on their well-being is now one of the duties of club stalwart Eddie Newton, former assistant to Roberto Di Matteo.

Atletico’s coach is ex-Argentina star Diego Simeone — infamously kicked during the 1998 World Cup by Beckham, earning the England man a red card.

His top target to replace Falcao is Suarez, whose agent is Pere Guardiola, brother of former Barcelona manager Pep.

Like a duck to water: Atletico Madrid won the Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup in the first six months of Diego Simeone's tenure

Sources say Atletico have made Pere Guardiola aware of Atletico’s interest. No approach for Suarez, rated at £35m by Atletico, is expected until Liverpool’s destiny this season is known.

The Anfield club still retain a theoretical, outside chance of Champions League football themselves next season.

Atletico’s second-choice striker target is Manchester United’s Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez.

  Late payment: Fabio Capello

Russians make Fabio wait

Former England manager Fabio Capello is considering his options after the late payment of his salary as the coach of Russia. It could leave the door open to any Premier League club hoping to enlist his services.

Although Chelsea have yet to contact Capello as a potential successor to Rafa Benitez, the Italian is understood to be open to the idea of a return to England. Capello, who was making £6million a year from the FA, was not put in any financial difficulty through delays in payment of his reported £7.8m salary with Russia.

He has saved enough money over the years to invest wisely in art and property and is never likely to go hungry.

  QPR facing block on transfers

QPR’s financial results for last season, released on Wednesday, raise the spectre of a financial crisis if they are relegated. One specialist says there could be ‘serious trouble ahead’.

QPR made a loss of £22.6million in their first season back in the Premier League. Their debts rose  to £89m. Most worrying of all was their ballooning wage bill, doubling from £29.7m  in 2010-11 to £58.5m last season.

That was before they signed 16 high-earning new players — 14 on permanent, long-term deals, including  Park Ji-sung, Robert Green, Junior Hoilett, Jose Bosingwa, Stephane Mbia, Loic Remy and Chris Samba. The current season’s wage bill is about £90m and this season’s losses could be £50m or more.

This is not a problem in itself for millionare owner Tony Fernandes and the minority stakeholder billionaire Mittal family.  But from 2014-15, losses over £6m annually in the Championship will be punished.

‘Clubs that breach the rules could be subject to a transfer embargo,’ says FFP expert Daniel Geey, a solicitor in the Sports Group at Field Fisher Waterhouse.

‘That embargo will only be lifted if strict criteria are satisfied.

‘It means any club in the Championship in the years ahead should be extremely wary of breaching Football League FFP.’

An English football club director has taken what is surely the biggest  year-on-year drop in pay in the whole of global sport, a whacking fall of £10,935,000, to be precise.

But before too many tears of sympathy are shed for Blackpool owner Owen Oyston, he is unlikely to be on his uppers any time soon.

He paid himself £65,000 in the 2011-12 season, according to the latest accounts, now public, and is still worth around £90m.

As Inside Sport was first to report last year, Oyston was the highest-paid football executive in 2010-11, paying himself £11m in the season Blackpool were relegated from the Premier League.
