Liverpool legend Jimmy Payne dies aged 86

Bootle-born Payne was one of only 30 players to play for both Merseyside clubs, although the majority of his career was spent with Liverpool.

Payne enjoyed eight years at Anfield, playing 243 games for the Reds and was the last surviving member of the first Liverpool side to feature at Wembley during the 1950 FA Cup final defeat to Arsenal.

He left Liverpool to join Merseyside rivals Everton in 1956 but his time on the Blue side of the city was restricted to just six games due to injury before he forced to retire just short of his 30th birthday.

Payne was affectionately known to fans as the ‘Merseyside Matthews’ in reference to former Blackpool, Stoke and England winger Stanley Matthews given his similar range of silky skills on the wing.

A statement on the Liverpool website read: ‘Everybody at Liverpool Football Club would like to pass on their condolences to Jimmy’s family and friends.’

His daughter Shirley Morgan told the site: ‘For the last eight years my dad has been in a home and it was a bit of a struggle but he fought to the bitter end, bless him. Thankfully he’s at peace now.’
