Kevin Pietersen' switch-hit should be cherished - Paul Newman

It is one of the most audacious, brilliant innovations that cricket has seen in years, but the world governing body's influential cricket committee will pronounce on the 'fairness' of Kevin Pietersen's switch-hit.

Curmudgeonly old bowlers have been chuntering about the legitimacy of a right-handed batsman switching to play a shot left-handed ever since the switch-hit was unveiled by Pietersen in a one-day international against New Zealand at Durham four years ago.

Risky: Pietersen switch-hits against Sri Lanka

But it is extraordinary that an International Cricket Council committee chaired by Clive Lloyd has felt the need to discuss the piece of genius during their annual meeting at Lord's.

There are some meaty issues on the agenda of a two-day summit which ends on Thursday, with the committee announcing recommendations that will go to the Test countries' chief executives, but it is the inclusion of the switch-hit that catches the eye.

Criticism: The England batsman's technique will be put under the microscope

It is beyond belief that such an act of breathtaking skill should in any way be considered negatively, and even resulted in a warning to Pietersen for 'time-wasting' during England's Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo last month, but the good news is there is no danger of the switch-hit being outlawed.

Instead, the 'worst' that might happen is a recommendation that the law is revised so that if a right-hander becomes left-handed his stumps change too. That way he is increasing the risk of getting out lbw if he switches, which is fairer to bowlers but will not stop Pietersen, nor the Australian David Warner who plays the shot brilliantly, from executing it.

Quite right, too, for it would be a crying shame if any youngsters are put off trying to emulate this rare talent just to satisfy those who put rules ahead of flair.

Pietersen has the perfect answer to any bowler who feels the shot gives an advantage to the batsmen. Try running in and bowling with your wrong hand if you like. Batsmen wouldn't mind. It would increase their chances of hitting boundaries, just as switching to the 'wrong' stance while batting should in theory make it easier for the bowler to take a wicket.

There really is nothing that needs changing.

We must grow a new flower

A record seventh successive home Test series win is yet another feather in the cap of the Andrew Strauss-Andy Flower regime, but the clock is already running down on their highly successful England partnership.

Strauss has given himself every chance of fulfilling his last great ambition of leading England into their back-to- back Ashes series next year with successive centuries against West Indies, but the biggest question in cricket now is how long will Flower continue?

Duo: Flower and Strauss have formed a highly successful partnership

It may seem premature to be worrying about the future of the Zimbabwean who has done so much for the England team, but the last thing the ECB need is to be caught on the hop when the day comes for Flower to call it a day. And it may not be too far away.

The England team director, who has become the most sought-after and respected coach in the game, has three young children and revealingly admitted last year:

'I'm not convinced I'm doing the right thing by my family by doing this job. I worry about the fact the kids might at some stage resent me being away during these years.'

Ton-derful: Struass hit back-to-back centuries at Trent Bridge

Hugh Morris, the excellent managing director of the England team, is acutely aware of the importance of Flower to what England have done and is trying to ease the burden by allowing him to have carefully planned breaks during the long months of touring.

The only trouble is, Flower is so dedicated to doing the job properly that he is reluctant to leave his post, even temporarily.

The only international he has missed so far since he took over the job in 2009 is the low-key trip to Dublin to play Ireland last year, while even when he had to have an emergency operation for skin cancer during the last Ashes tour, he was only absent for two days.

Morris is cagey over discussing any succession plans, saying only that his priority is to keep Flower at the helm of the England team for as long as possible, but it would be remiss of the ECB if they had not already started thinking about a Flowerless future.

The journalist Steve James, a close friend of Flower, says in his excellent new book The Plan that he believes the Zimbabwean will only carry on for a 'maximum' of two more years, with the next World Cup in Australia in 2015 being the likeliest departure point.

With that in mind it is fascinating to see what England do next. When Flower was absent in Ireland it was Richard Halsall, the highly regarded fielding coach, who stepped in rather than the vastly experienced batting coach Graham Gooch and it is not inconceivable that Halsall might follow Duncan Fletcher and Flower in becoming the third Zimbabwean in charge of the England team.

Whoever eventually gets the job will have big shoes to fill and getting the right man will be a huge decision, hence the necessity for Morris and Co to start thinking about it now. That clock is ticking.
