Global greening: Famous landmarks light up in emerald hue to celebrate St Patrick's Day
From the London Eye to Las Vegas, the Sphinx to Niagara Falls, attractions around the world are going green for Ireland
St Patrick's Day may be an Irish celebration but that hasn't stopped the rest of the world joining in the festivities. Famous landmarks around the globe have gone green to honour the patron saint of Ireland. The London Eye, Glasgow’s ‘Armadillo’ and Liverpool FC’s home, Anfield, are just some of the British sites illuminated for March 17. From mainland Europe and North America to Australasia, via Africa, the Middle East and Asia, an epic ‘ global greening ’ will see 40 of the world’s most iconic structures and attractions adopt the emerald hue. Other landmarks joining the celebrations include the Pyramids and Sphinx, the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Copenhagen’s Little Mermaid and Niagara Falls. Niall Gibbons, chief executive of Tourism Ireland , said: “Our greening initiative is back and bigger than ever for this St. Patrick’s Day. “We’re inviting people from all over the world to join in our unique celebrations, putting smiles on even more faces across the globe as we showcase the wonderful experiences on offer from a visit to Ireland.” Take a look at these emerald attractions that will have the rest green with envy...
