Glencore is latest London-listed raw material firm linked to oil price fixing probe following BP and Shell's surprise raids

Glencore became the latest London-listed natural resources firm to be linked to a probe into oil fixing. BP and Shell are already under the microscope.

European Commission officials sent requests for information to a host of oil trading firms, including the commodities giant, one of the very few to be listed on the stock market.

It came a week after the London offices of BP and Shell were raided by Brussels competition officials looking into allegations that oil traders have colluded to fix prices since 2002.

Investigations: The request for information could have come at a better time for Glencore which parted ways with senior directors last week

Oil industry sources said that while BP and Shell were subjected to surprise raids, Glencore’s offices were not visited by Commission officials. Instead, the firm is understood to be one of several trading companies to be asked for information about how the industry functions.

Rivals Gunvor and Vitol are also understood to have received requests for information, but there is no suggestion that any of the three firms are under investigation.

The Commission is looking at whether traders submitted artificially high figures to price reporting agency Platts, in a case reminiscent of the Libor scandal that rocked the banking sector last year.

It said last week that such activity may have increased prices for petrol retailers, in turn hitting already hard-pressed motorists in the pocket.

Officials are said to be seeking information from dozens of businesses involved in the submission and publishing of prices for oil and petroleum products.

The request for information comes at an inopportune moment for Glencore, which parted company with chairman Sir John Bond and a host of former Xstrata directors last week. Former BP boss Tony Hayward has stepped up to become chairman in the interim. Shares fell 3.8p to 334.95p.
