Two things are hampering the hunt for the bombers – the wait for forensic results and the confusion caused by the atrocity itself.The FBI will be studying masses of evidence including thousands of hours of CCTV footage. And the inevitable question is: where will it lead them?They will be investigating if the plot was carried out by al-Qaeda sympathisers.The Boston bombings were probably planned for a long time but could still have been carried out by a small terrorist cell.As well as a large number of victims, this attack was guaranteed to spark huge worldwide coverage.These are factors to bear in mind when you consider that al-Qaeda is hungry for publicity as well as blood.While nothing can be discounted it is possible the bombs were planted by lunatic US citizens, rather than Islamic extremists.America’s security chiefs still smart from accusations that al-Qaeda’s 9/11 attacks could have been avoided.This may have resulted in the FBI taking its eye off the domestic terror threat.The Boston bombs were detonated as Massachusetts marked Patriots’ Day.It was also within days of the anniversaries of the Waco massacre in 1993, the Oklahoma bombing in 1995, the Columbine School shootings in 1999, and the Virginia Techtragedy in 2007.So the timing of the Boston atrocity may point to it being carried out by an American or Americans who despise the government.In recent history there have been a string of Americans who have gone on crazed killing sprees.When the latest horror mystery is solved we could be very surprised.
