Teen dies playing chicken with train: A polite, 15 year old Austin Price passed away on Thursday. The young teen that lived in Hayward, was hit and killed by a train, when he failed to jump out of the way whilst playing a dangerous game of chicken with 2 other youths. The other two teens remained unhurt in the incident according to Deputy April Luckett, an Alameda county sheriff.
Austin was considered by his friends to be a sweet and caring and had always enjoyed making other people laugh. He was a very considerate young teen and would often be late for classes whilst going out of his way to pick up a friend.
Many of the local community, but in particular students at San Lorenzo High School walk close to the train tracks and this has proven to be a constant worry for Tovi Scruggs the principle of the High School. Signs can be found warning students against getting too close to the tracks and as Mr Scruggs has stated “Tragedies don’t happen very often, but it may only be a matter of time before another teen dies playing chicken.
A lot of the teens at the school can be found playing chicken with the trains and according to Olympia Pereira, a 16 year old friend of Austin “They played all the time”, “It was just a game”.
Teens from the school held a vigil on Friday, quietly laughing at their memories of Austin and had Austin have been there on Friday, he would have been late for class whilst walking his Friend Tania to school. Tania had been friends with Austin since fifth grade and she stated “People won’t be by the tracks anymore”.
A sign hung in the main courtyard of the school which read “Austin, we’ll miss you”. Hopefully the tragedy will serve as a warning before another young teen dies playing chicken.
