Liverpool produced their best team performance of the season at Newcastle and Luis Suarez was nowhere to be seen. Philippe Coutinho, Daniel Sturridge and Stewart Downing are £40m of talent so they shouldn’t fall apart without the Uruguayan. Sturridge, in particular, tormented Newcastle.

Star man
Another impressive win for West Brom, who must be delighted to have 48 points at this stage. They must be praying they can persuade on-loan Romelu Lukaku to return from Chelsea next season. Two more goals and he’ll have the most top-flight strikes in a season for Albion since Garry Thompson in 1984-85.
Wing the changes
After missing out on Robin van Persie, a striker must be top of Manchester City’s shopping list. They also need a winger. Full-backs Pablo Zabaleta and Gael Clichy give width but a skilful winger would add another dimension and offer protection when David Silva and Samir Nasri drift inside.

Callum prospers
Callum McManaman is unfortunately still best known for his horrific tackle on Massadio Haidara, but if he carries on playing like he is at the moment, that will not last. The winger, 22, is a rare Englishman at Wigan but we should be excited about him. The way he smashed in his first Premier League goal against Tottenham was fantastic.

Time to rebuild
What a sorry season for Reading and QPR and a drab 0-0 seemed a fitting way to confirm relegation. Nigel Adkins knows how to get a team up and will look forward to next season’s challenge. As for my dad, I’m sure he’ll stay at QPR. He’s hurt by what’s happened.
Madley calm in madness
Referee Robert Madley probably thought his first Premier League game would be a quiet affair seeing as Southampton and West Brom had little to play for. How wrong could he be? It was a feisty game with three big calls for the 27-year-old but he got all three red cards correct. Referees often get a hard time but he will be delighted with his debut.

Phil in another role
Phil Jones played in a more advanced role than normal at Arsenal and, as ever, impressed. He is a modern day Steve Nicol, who I played with at Liverpool, a great utility player if never fully appreciated. Jones, though, will settle down as Manchester United’s No 1 centre back once Rio Ferdinand has departed.

Top four twists
With Arsenal and Spurs held, it was a great weekend for Chelsea, who beat Swansea. But they needed three points as they travel to Old Trafford next while Andre Villas-Boas’s Tottenham host Southampton and Arsenal visit relegated QPR. It could be all change again.
