Time to get shredding! Classic music videos by artists including The Beach Boys

Cringe-worthy performances are part of what makes the likes of X-Factor and Britain's Got Talent entertaining.

But ever wondered if even the greatest pop groups and singers have an off day?

This is the premise behind the painfully funny new internet craze 'shredding'.

Awkward: Out-of-tune singers have posted a version of The Beach Boys classic 'I Get Around'

Painful: A number of YouTube users have started posting their 'shreds' of famous songs on the site

Amateur singers sync their not-so-perfect vocals and playing skills with videos of well-known artists.

A 'shredded' version of The Beach Boys’ classic ‘I Get Around’, uploaded by user Massbetelnut, has already attracted over 1.6million hits on YouTube.

And the trend is spreading quickly, with takes on Metallica, Nirvana, Muse and even Michael Bolton popping up on the video-sharing site. Some of the videos have been online for months, but are now rapidly growing in popularity.

Gwendal Cadou, who recorded the widely shared Beach Boys' video, says he was inspired by another YouTube user, Stsanders, who he says first coined the phrase ‘Shredding’ – by mimicking ’80s icons Guns N’ Roses and Van Halen in his videos.

The name refers to heavy metal-style guitar playing and the word’s literal meaning. Users strip the songs back to their bare minimum and then add an amusing twist, such as over-exaggerated handclaps, detuned guitar strums or vocals like cat fights.

Crucified: Soul singer Michael Bolton is another of the artists to have fallen victim to a YouTube 'shred'

Not quite the same: The version of Kenny G and Michael Bolton's performance has attracted more than 200,000 views on YouTube

'I find it funny to play with sound effects,' said Cadou, a 34-year-old from France, 'so that in some of my videos you can barely recognise the original song.'

'Most of the time, I record everything with one of my friends then edit the tracks as quickly as I can.

'They’re fun to make. Once each track is edited, the result is quite unpredictable: stupid, unbearable, creepy,' he said.
