Sales of winter food reach 'unprecedented levels' as families turn to pies and stews to keep out the cold

Ribsticking and warming, there is nothing so sure to keep out the winter chill as a hot pie and buttery mash, or a steaming stew.

And it seems families across the country have been relying on the heart and soul warming fare to combat the continued cold conditions.

Retailers say sales of winter foods such as stews, casseroles, hearty soups and pies have reached 'unprecedented levels' because of spring's late arrival.

According to trade magazine The Grocer, some supermarkets have reported selling triple their usual amount of so-called comfort foods ahead of what is said to have been the coldest Easter on record.

Supermarket Morrisons said that sales of pies were up by 246 per cent in the week leading up to the Easter weekend, and the chain sold 80 per cent more cans and cartons of soup than in the same period last year.

In the week running up to the bank holiday, sales of packets of mixed 'casserole vegetables' increased by 39 per cent compared to the previous.

Sales of parsnips were up by 10 per cent, and swedes up by 18 per cent in the week before Easter than in the previous week.

And sales of herbs and spices almost doubled.

Waitrose recorded an increase last month in demand fo meat joints, potatoes and hot desserts, nudging a 14.5 per cent rise in total sales.

This is despite this time of year usually leading to an increase in demand for lighter food products such as salad ingredients, marinades and dressings, retailers said.

Fine food distributor RH Amar attributed the change in buying patterns - which saw it sell 80 per cent more canned tomatoes and tomato purée last month than in March 2012- to the prolonged cold weather.

Rob Amar, RH Amar’s managing director, said the food industry was susceptible to the elements.

He said: 'The prolonged cold spell has clearly made its mark at the tills as key autumn and winter ingredients such as canned tomatoes, peppers and pulses continue to prove popular with shoppers.'

Britain had its coldest Easter day on record on March 31, with temperatures dropping to lows of -12.5C.

Last week Britain was hit by some of the coldest April temperatures for almost 100 years.

A Morrisons spokesman said demand for traditional winter meals and ingredients, such as pie and stews, was 'unseasonably high'.

They added: 'We wouldn’t expect this level of demand for casserole and stew ingredients as we move into spring.'
