Rare Honus Wagner baseball card sells for $2.1m



One of the rarest baseball cards of all, a 1909-11 Honus Wagner, has sold for $2.1 million early Saturday morning after an extended bidding period.


There is a buyer's premium included in the final price.

The baseball card was the highest selling item at the April 5th Goldin Auctions' showcase alongside a copy of Alex Rodriquez's 2009 World Series ring that sold for $50,398 and a signed Derek Jeter bat swung in the 2001 World Series that fetched $37,486.

The Wagner card is baseball's most famous card with no more than 100 copies believed to exist.

It previously sold for $1.62 million at a 2008 auction, the Post reported.


The card sold today was a 'Jumbo' Wagner, so classified because its edges are 1/16th larger than standard cards.







The T206 cards were tucked into cigarette packs, as opposed to bubble gum cards and the glossy finished releases of today.

Wagner's cards were pulled from the packaging.


Though no one knows for certain why the card was removed, there are stories that he didn't want to encourage children to smoke, and that he was upset over low compensation from the American Tobacco Company.

Nicknamed 'The Flying Dutchman,' Wagner played shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1900 to 1917.

He was among the Hall of Fame's first group of inductees in 1936.


Hockey icon Wayne Gretzky once owned a version surrounded by controversy as some believe the card's edges had been trimmed decades ago to improve its condition and uncover added value.
