Princess Diana’s life is being made into an Iron Lady-style blockbuster based on her bodyguard’s memoirs.
BAFTA-winning British film producer Stephen Evans wants to show the world “the real Diana” in the years leading up to her divorce from Prince Charles. He is lining up a Hollywood actress to play her.
The £30million film, out next year, will be told from the point of view of bodyguard Ken Wharfe and is based on his controversial 2007 book Diana: Closely Guarded Secret.
Evans, who hopes to emulate the success of hit The Iron Lady, about former Prime Minister Baroness Thatcher, has been working with the late princess’s private secretary, Commander Patrick Jephson.
The plot will follow the years before Diana’s 1996 divorce.
But it will not cover her relationship with Dodi Fayed or conspiracy theories about her death in a Paris car crash in 1997.
It is expected to show how close Diana became to Wharfe. She trusted him to look after her young sons, Princes William and Harry, who called him “Uncle Ken”.
Evans said: “We are dealing with about 11 years of her life from just after she had Harry, when he’s aged about two, and it’s partly from the point of view of her protection bodyguard.
“The emphasis on this really is authenticity and to discover what she went through. Unless you are a Diana freak, quite a lot of it will be unknown to the audience.
“The movie’s not saying she is unbelievably wonderful or she’s a pain in the neck, the audience can make their own view.
“I think she had some marvellous qualities, absolutely phenomenal qualities and tremendous charisma. She was also very good at one-liners ...very witty, sharp.
“Intellectually, she was not in the top level but on the other hand had native cunning, stubbornness. Once she made up her mind she was like a bulldozer.
“She could be a pain, she was lethal. She utilised friendships and dumped friendships.”
Evans hopes to repeat the success of The Iron Lady, which was released last month and has already made £8.2million.
Its star Meryl Streep has won a Golden Globe for her role as the former Prime Minister and the film has been nominated for two Oscars and four BAFTAs.
Evans, who produced The Madness of King George, said: “The performance of Meryl Streep is the greatest I have ever seen.
“The movie itself isn’t great, but you do believe you are watching Margaret Thatcher. It’s a tour de force.”
Actresses rumoured to portray Diana, who would have turned 51 this year, include Charlize Theron, 36, and Carey Mulligan, 26, with Ewan McGregor, 40, lined up to play bodyguard Wharfe.
Evans would not reveal who is currently favourite to play the princess, saying: “It’s a slightly closed book until we get her. We are looking at one or two relatively unknowns we think could play Diana well, and also one or two very famous people. How do you know when you’ve found the right person? Whenyou’ve made the movie. You see, that’s the risk.”
The producer says making the actress who wins the role look the part won’t be a problem: “You have now got all the prosthetics.” And he reveals that there has already been a lot of interest from financiers: “Everyone is interested in Diana.
“It’s very easy... I hate to use that term but it’s probably the easiest film I’d have financed.”
Meanwhile two other Diana biopics are in pre-production.
Keira Knightley, 26, and Scarlett Johansson, 27, are rumoured to star in a Pathé film called Diana.
And rising US actress Jessica Chastain, 30, is set to star in Caught in Flight, which will focus on Diana’s relationship with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan.
