A tiny tree frog stares into a photographer’s lens. An affectionate ape cuddles its little one.These are just some of the stunning images vying to be crowned the winner of the 2013 National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest.Now in its 25th year, the competition invites photographers from around the world to enter their best snaps from their travels.Contestants can submit photographs in all or any of four categories: Travel Portraits; Outdoor Scenes; Sense of Place; and Spontaneous Moments.National Geographic have already received hundreds of incredible images since the contest launched earlier this month.One stunning image shows a woman standing on the edge of the Darvaza Crater in Turkmenistan, which is known as the ‘Door to Hell’.Another heartwarming image captured a kangaroo basking in the sunshine, the photographer suggesting the animal had enjoyed one too many cookies.

“In the last few years it seems as if the quality of shots has taken a quantum leap forward,” said Keith Bellows, National Geographic Traveler magazine editor in chief.“The pictures increasingly reflect a more sophisticated way of seeing and interpreting the world, making the judging process more difficult.“We encourage photographers to enter their work and compete against the best.”The contest ends on Sunday June 30 and the grand prize winner will receive a 10-day National Geographic Expedition to the Galápagos aboard the National Geographic Endeavour.
