A 52-year-old suicide bomber 'who
didn't like the authorities' blew himself up on the lawn of his suburban
California home last night.
The man of Bermuda Drive, Costa Mesa, identified in local reports as Kevin Harris, killed himself with a makeshift explosive device in the blast around 7.30pm on Sunday.
Police found three more homemade bombs inside his property today which they safely detonated, according to the Daily Pilot.
Response: Various emergency services responded to the explosion last night in which a 52-year-old man killed himself
Neighbors said police had been previously called to the property and officers told KTLA the man had a dislike for government and law enforcement agencies.
However, previous incidents weren't ever of this nature, they added.
A bizarre rambling 17,000 word essay written by Kevin Harris, who said he lived at the home, was posted online in 2005.
It speaks about a conspiracy theory around government agents mentioning aliens and the O.J. Simpson case.
It said: 'I am at 3152 Bermuda Dr., Costa Mesa, CA, USA. You can tell it’s me because I am the only one who can get into my house. I think it may be dangerous for you to come to my house alone.'
Neighbors confirmed he had a dislike for the government but said he was quiet and kept himself to himself.
'We were in the house when we heard the explosion,' Laurie, a neighbor, told CBS. 'We always hear fireworks or whatever and didn’t think much of it until the cops showed up.'
Mystery surrounds what took place last night but officers are focusing on making the property safe today.
Three more explosive devices were found inside the house this morning and 16 homes in the residential area remain evacuated while the search continues.
Yesterday afternoon police were called to the property when neighbors reported the man lying unresponsive on his front lawn.
An ambulance was also called but the man refused to go to hospital.
An hour later the bomb went off and officers returned to find the exploded site and the man lying dead in his doorway.
There are multiple agencies working at the scene, including the FBI, the O.C. Sheriff’s Department, the O.C. Fire Authority, Costa Mesa fire and police and a Huntington Beach hazmat team.
