Hundreds of Wolverhampton supporters invade pitch and confront players' after team's loss



Hundreds of Wolverhampton Wanderers fans invaded the pitch following their defeat to Burnley this afternoon, but were pushed back when they were confronted with stewards and police.


Supporters of the relegration-threatened team appeared to remonstrate with players after making their way on to the pitch at Molineux to vent their anger at the final whistle.

One fan even punched a hole in the manager's dugout as fans shouted towards the stands following the defeat.

But they were forced back towards the stands by police and stewards

The result left the West Midlands team on the brink of relegation from the npower Championship and fans appeared to want to let their feelings known as they made their way on to the pitch as dejected-looking players tried to make their way off.

But the fans were then forced back towards the edge of the pitch by police and stewards.


The disappointed Wolves fans however were not the only ones who decided to stage a pitch invasion with supporters of teams across the country making their way on to grounds as the fate of a number of teams was sealed at this late stage of the season.

The afternoon saw a number of teams promoted or relegated from their respective leagues, prompting pitch invasions as fans celebrated or commiserated with their team.

The incidents come in the same month that a Blue Square Premier League match was suspended after angry fans invaded the pitch and allegedly attacked players from both sides.


A week earlier the sport witnessed a weekend of shame as violence marred Millwall's FA Cup tie and the Newcastle versus Sunderland clash in the Premier League.

Last week, Kidderminster Harrier's vital final game of the season at home to Stockport County was suspended early in the second half after visiting fans invaded the pitch when their side, who needed to win the match to avoid relegation, went a goal down.

The incident reportedly saw Harriers player Lee Vaughan punched by a fan.

Referee Michael Bull was forced to suspend the game and take the players off the pitch for safety reasons while stewards and police attempted to calm the situation.

The match resumed almost thirty minutes later with Kidderminster eventually winning 4-0.

A week earlier, fights erupted among Millwall supporters as their side lost 2-0 to Wigan at Wembley, leaving some fans with bloodied noses and younger ones weeping as they watched fans and officers clash.


And Newcastle fans ran amok and clashed with riot police as their side lost to local rivals Sunderland in the Premier League.
