How to get that red carpet glow at home

The awards season is in full swing, and at the Baftas this Sunday Hollywood's leading ladies will be out in force, looking their glossy best.

It takes time, talent and years of backstage know-how to perfect an award-winning look, so here ELSA McALONAN asks the experts how they do it...

Red carpet ready: Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Lawrence get it right with a bold lip and smoky eye

HOLLYWOOD HAIR

Charles Worthington, official hairstylist for Bafta, says: 'The key to glossy locks during the awards season is preparation. Celebrities love big and bouncy hair for the red carpet and the best way to achieve this look is with heated rollers.'

Swap your regular conditioner for a deep conditioning treatment, (try Tresemmé Restructuring Deep Conditioning Treatment Masque, £4.99, superdrug.com) when you wash your hair. Apply it and rinse off as you would your normal conditioner.

Rough-dry your hair with a towel and spray the roots thoroughly with a volumising styling spray. Blast the hair with a hairdryer until it is almost dry (about 80 per cent) with your head upside down for extra volume at the roots. Divide into two-inch sections, giving each one a quick spritz with hairspray before you use the rollers.

Starting at the front of the hair, put the rollers in (we like BaByliss 3035U Ceramic High Speed Rollers, £29.95, johnlewis.com) working to the nape of the neck.

Be sure to leave the rollers to go completely cold before removing - this ensures the volume lasts, as hair hardens as it cools down, resulting in better hold.

Brush using a natural bristle brush to about the mid-length of your hair, then leave the ends.

Charles Worthington Bafta Edition Volume Treatment

This will slightly break up and soften the curl, without losing the shape altogether. Finally, apply a finishing gloss and more hairspray to hold in place.

STAR PRODUCT

Try the Charles Worthington Bafta Edition Instant Amplifying Volume Treatment (£14.99, Boots) which is enriched with collagen for a 'plumping effect' on hair.

BE A GOLDEN GIRL

For red carpet events, the trend is for a soft bronze tan with hints of golden shimmer, says St Tropez tanning expert Fiona Locke.

'Muted coloured gowns are always popular and it's important to have an even skin tone that's vibrant enough to complement the gown so you don't get lost in the colour,' she says.

Use a gentle exfoliator the night before to remove any dead skin cells, paying special attention to the hands, elbows, knees and feet, and add a light layer of moisturiser to these dry areas.

Using an applicator mitt to ensure an even, streak-free finish, apply tanning mousse - go as light or dark as you wish - depending on how much colour you want. Use a sweeping upward motion to apply, blending the layers as you go. When tanning your hands and feet, don't add any additional product to the tanning mitt, just use the residue from the body application, this will be enough.

St Tropez Self Tan Mousse

Once your tan has developed, create the illusion of contours using a shimmer stick. You can add definition by shading where natural contours occur, on the biceps and around the thigh and calf muscles. To contour the cleavage area, take a large sized bronzing brush and gently dust bronzer in between the bust.

STAR PRODUCT

St Tropez Self Tan Mousse in Original (£20.43) or Dark (£33, sttropeztan.com). If you're fair, don't be afraid to use a darker self-tan than usual for a special occasion.

MAGICAL MAKE-UP

Bafta make-up artist and Lancôme ambassador Alex Babsky says: 'It's essential to spend time preparing the skin to ensure a flawless foundation application. I like to cleanse and tone, which leaves skin polished and means I need to use less foundation to make the skin look its best.'

GET THE LOOK

use the sheerest veil of foundation you can get away with. Once you've applied it, blot the face with a tissue to absorb any excess moisture to ensure the make-up stays put, before dusting loose powder down the centre of the face.

For a prettier look, add blusher to the apples of the cheek, near the nose. Whereas for a more sophisticated look, move the colour further up to the tops of the cheekbones nearer the outside of the face.

A cream blusher gives a fresh and pretty look as the moisture in the product adds dewiness to the skin. Powder blush gives a polished, groomed finish.

STAR PRODUCT

For the red carpet this year, Alex will be using Lancôme Bafta Limited Edition blusher in Rose Sable, (£27, Selfridges).

SPARKLING EYES

The A-List's favourite facialist Nichola Joss says: 'Celebrities often turn up to see me with puffy eyes on the day of a big event, so there are some simple steps that I rely on to quickly eradicate puffiness and brighten the eye area.'

Lancôme Bafta Limited Edition blusher and Sanctuary Peptide Repair Eye Cream

Start by prepping the eye contour area, spritzing with very cold water to cool and calm the skin. Then gently massage an eye cream into the skin to stimulate lymph drainage.

Make sure you only use a pea-size amount and gently tap, using your middle finger from the outside of the cheek bone inwards along the upper cheek bone and into the eye area and the bridge of the nose.

Moving upwards, apply more pressure and sweep along the eyebrow and brow bone to the outer corners of the eye.

This will gently lift the brows and de-stress the muscle. Repeat and circle the eye six times, massaging any cream residue into the temple area.

Finish by placing a cotton pad that has been in the freezer for a few minutes over the eye - the cold pressure immediately reduces puffiness and pushes the cream deeper into the eye contour area to nourish, brighten and repair the delicate skin.

STAR PRODUCT

The new Sanctuary Peptide Repair Eye Cream (£18, Boots) is a lightweight cream containing a powerful peptide to help skin feel lifted and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

As good as a facial?

Zelens Transformer face masks

Many A-list celebrities prefer to have facials before they appear on the red carpet, having scheduled their appointments for 'tweaks', such as Botox or fillers, weeks before.

They need their complexions to be smooth so that make-up sits beautifully on the surface of the skin. Dr Marko Lens, skin ageing and skin cancer specialist, says: 'Very often it takes a week for Botox to settle and appear natural.'

Zelens Transformer face masks (£120 for five masks, SpaceNK) are the next best thing to a facial with the man himself, which costs £295 for 30 minutes.

MAC special range of make-up

It's Chinese New Year on Sunday - and the year of the snake - so MAC has produced a range of make-up to mark the occasion.

Wrapped in chic black packaging with swirling snake designs, the flattering shades will suit all skin tones. My favourite is Shell Pearl Beauty Powder, a pale peach with a slight gold pearl to illuminates and add warmth (£22, maccosmetics.co.uk).

The lustre lipsticks come in Freckletone (neutral peach); Cockney (sheer yellow) and Plumful (rose-plum).

A clean sweep

The High Street has produced another beauty sensation. B.Pure Micellar Water from new beauty brand B became an instant success when it hit shops last month.

Originating in France, Micellar Water contains oil molecules that remove make-up, dirt, mascara and grease from the skin. And until next Wednesday Superdrug is selling it for £3.99 (it's usually £4.99, which is still a bargain - Vichy's similar Purete Calming Micellar Cleansing Solution is £11).

Apply B.Pure to a cotton pad, wipe and you're good to go. It also contains gentle, cooling cucumber extract, and is the same pH as eyes to avoid stinging them. Suitable for all skin types.
