CHAMPIONS LEAGUE LIVE: Bayern Munich 4 Barcelona 0

Follow Sportsmail's coverage of the Champions League as Bayern Munich host Barcelona at the Allianz Arena in the first leg of their semi-final.

The newly crowned German champions cruised past Juventus in the previous round after knocking Arsenal out in the last 16 and look in good shape as they attempt to book a third final in four years.

Barcelona meanwhile remain among the hot favourites to lift Europe's biggest club prize but will hope to improve on their last European outing having only just edged past Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals.

Send me your thoughts on the action at dan.ripley@dailymail.co.uk or via Twitter @Ripinho.

21.43: Well that's it from me here but make sure you check back tomorrow for live coverage of the other Champions League semi-final as Borussia Dortmund host Real Madrid. Cheerio.

21.38: So who saw that coming? While a Bayern victory isn't surprising, the 4-0 winning margin will have sent shock waves around Europe.

It's not all over of course, but I can't think of many teams that have overturned a four-goal deficit in Europe...if any.

Full-time: Bayern Munich 4-0 Barcelona

90+2min: Another Barca booking as Iniesta sees yellow for a trip on Martinez.

90+1min: With three minutes of injury time to be played:

From OptaJoe:

1997 - The last team to beat Barcelona 4-0 in the Champions League were Dyanmo Kyiv in November 1997 (Group Stages). Thumped.

90min: Barcelona are capitulating here as Jordi Alba is booked for cheekily throwing the ball into Robben's face - he will now miss the second leg following an entirely unnecessary booking.

89min: Bastian Schweinsteiger also sees yellow as Ribery is replaced by Xherdan Shaqiri.

86min: There has been absolutely no response from Barcelona as Alexis Sanchez is booked for a trip on Robben.

83min: A change from both sides as Bayern send Claudio Pizarro on for Muller, while David Villa replaces Pedro for Barca.

Doubling up: Thomas Muller slid home to score his second goal

82min: GOAL! BAYERN MUNICH 4-0 Barcelona

This is turning into one of the great European performances. Munich have one eye on Wembley now after David Alaba squares from the byline to allow Thomas Muller to tap home his second goal. The Barcelona defence has had more holes than a tennis racket tonight.

79min: The tie is so nearly put to bed. Jordi Alba's poor backpass allows Muller to steal in on goal, but after turning Pique, his poked effort is well blocked by Valdes at point blank range.

76min: What a chance for Barca! This tie isn't all lost if they can find an away goal, but they blow their best chance of getting one with 14 minutes left. A free-kick finds Bartra inside the box onside and completely unmarked, but as the defender tries to turn and face goal he blasts his shot miles over and miles wide.

Three and easy: Arjen Robben curled home across the target to score Bayern Munich's third goal

73min: GOAL! BAYERN MUNICH 3-0 Barcelona

A clinical counter from Bayern but it's another controversial goal. Arjen Robben cuts inside from the right in the area but his marker Jordi Alba is blocked off the ball by Muller before the Dutchman curls beautifully across goal and into the bottom corner.

71min: First change for the hosts as Luiz Gustavo replaces Gomez.

70min: That's a first tonight. Messi charges at the Bayern defence before his shot deflects wide for a corner - we really have seen very little of the Argentine.

Spinning his marker: Bayern Munich's Philipp Lahm turns Barcelona's Alexis Sanchez

67min: From OptaJean:

57 - Bayern Munich have lost none of their previous 57 home CL games after having scored the opening goal. Irretrievable.

64min: Neuer is still untroubled but Barca are at least starting to spend more time in Bayern's half. The end product is still missing however and the home side still look comfortable.

61min: Over 15 minutes have gone in the second half and Barcelona look no closer to getting back into this match. Tito Vilanova must be thinking about making a change as Bayern look well in control.

Tangle: Bayern's Thomas Muller closes down Barcelona's Andres Iniesta

58min: From InfostradaLive:

Barcelona only once won a point after falling two goals behind in a CL away match. On 16 September 1998 they drew 3-3 at Manchester United after a 2-0 deficit.

55min: And another Bayern chance! This time Robben stabs the ball to Ribery inside the box but the French midfielder slides the ball wide across the target.

52min: It's all Bayern now as Muller drills a low shot just wide of the target - the German side look well aware of the fact that despite the lead, this tie is far from over.

Double trouble: Mario Gomez (right) scored Bayern Munich's second goal

49min: GOAL! BAYERN MUNICH 2-0 Barcelona

Another set-piece failure for Barca. Robben's corner is nodded across the target by Muller and from close range Mario Gomez turns the ball home. There are shades of offside though it has to be said.

46min: No quick goals but a quick yellow as Javi Martinez is booked for a foul on Andres Iniesta. By the way the way, the groundsman were on the pitch at half-time attempting to drain the water in the centre of the pitch with pitchforks.

Second-half: Away we go again at the Allianz Arena - no changes folks.

Reaching out: Bayern Munich's David Alaba attempts to block Pedro Rodriguez's cross

20.41: From InfostradaLive:

Last time Barcelona won a Champions League away match after trailing at half time, was in October 2008 when they beat Shakhtar Donetsk (UKR) 1-2.

Bayern have won their last 10 CL home matches in which they were leading at the half. The last time they lost after leading at half time was on 15 March 2011, when they were beaten 3-2 by Internazionale (2-1 lead at half time).

20.38: That statistic sums up the half. Barca have had their usual high possession but they really have toiled in the final third trying to find Messi. Bayern meanwhile remain dangerous in attack, especially from set-pieces - and look more cunning.

20.35: From OptaJoe:

6/1 - Bayern Munich have had just 35.5 per cent possession in the first half but attempted six shots (incl. blocked) to Barcelona's one. Intent.

At full stretch: Bayern's Thomas Muller attempts a sliding tackle on Barcelona's Lionel Messi

Half-time: Bayern Munich 1-0 Barcelona

42min: For the first time since the early stages of the game, Barcelona are starting to find their passing rhythm again. But Neuer remains noting more than a spectator in the Bayern goal and the visitors still need to find another gear or two to get back into this.

Cautioned: Bayern Munich's Mario Gomez (centre) was booked for leaping into Barcelona's Lionel Messi

39min: And now our second booking and again there is no complaints as Marc Bartra sees yellow for a high and clumsy aerial challenge on Muller.

37min: Our first yellow card of the evening and they don't come much more blatant than this as Mario Gomez launches into the back of Messi's leg before being cautioned.

35min: From InfostradaLive:

Barcelona last came back to win or draw an away CL match after a 1-0 deficit in September 2010. They drew 1-1 at Rubin Kazan after a 1-0 deficit.

Staying calm: Bayern Munich boss Jupp Heynckes watches on from the touchline

32min: Barcelona are really struggling to deal with Bayern's set-pieces. This time a corner finds Dante again, where his header hits the arm of Alexis Sanchez from close range. The forward's hand was slightly raised but he had very little chance to move it as Barca survive another penalty appeal.

29min: Superb defending from Dante - or fortunate. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and go with the former as he slides towards his own goal to turn a low cross across the face of the target and out for a corner. Lionel Messi was waiting at the back post so the Brazilian had to make some sort of contact.

28min: From InfostradaLive:

Thomas Muller scores his sixth CL goal of the season. This was already his personal best. Only two German players have scored more goals in a single CL season: Miroslav Klose (7 in 2008/2009) and Mario Gomez (8 in 2010/2011 and 12 in 2011/2012).

Breakthrough: Thomas Muller bundled Bayern Munich ahead

25min: GOAL! BAYERN MUNICH 1-0 Barcelona

It's been coming and finally the German side's pressure pays off. A corner eventually finds Dante inside the area and his headed effort back across goal is powerfully nodded home by Thomas Muller.

22min: Bayern are slightly fortunate to win a corner as Jordi Alba was adjudged to have failed in keeping the ball in play, but Robben's set-piece is punched clear by Valdes before the visitors win a free-kick for an infringement inside the box.

19min: The home side continue to look dangerous as they go forward but whether it's by handball or other means, the Barcelona back-four isn't struggling too much to cope with the German side. Going forward though it's a different story as Lionel Messi and Co have yet to get into the game.

Clash of the titans: Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery fight for the ball

16min: A strong penalty claim from Bayern Munich, as Philipp Lahm's shot is clearly blocked from a raised Pique arm. It's very subtle from the defender but he is very fortunate to get away with that.

14min: From InfostradaLive:

Bayern have never lost a CL semifinal match at home (5W – 1D). Their only draw was in April 1995: 0-0 against Ajax.

11min: A very even opening to a game which neither side has yet to take control of. Barcelona's passing looks better at this stage but it's Valdes who has had to make the only save of the match so far.

Aiming low: Bayern Munich's Arjen Robben sees a shot saved by Barcelona's Victor Valdes

8min: In fact one or two players are slipping on other areas of the watered pitch as Barcelona win their first corner, which is headed wide by Gerard Pique.

5min: The home side have settled now but we have the bizarre case of a waterlogged pitch.

There's been no rain in Munich today but the centre-circle is holding standing water from what is most likely from the sprinklers that watered the pitch before the game.

2min: It takes nearly 80 seconds for Bayern to touch the ball but they carve out the first opportunity. Arjen Robben's through pass feeds in Javi Martinez, and after the forward returns the favour with a cut-back, the winger's low shot is well blocked by Victor Valdes.

Ready to go: The players arrive on the pitch at the Allianz Arena

Kick-off: Away we go at the Allianz Arena as Barcelona possession is immediately jeered by the home crowd.

19.41: Both sets of teams are on the field, as the home fans raise red and white cards to represent Bayern Munich's colours.

19.36: From InfostradaLive:

Bayern are the first German team to play two consecutive Champions League semifinals since 1998/1999, 1999/2000 and 2000/2001, when they themselves achieved this feat.

Preparing: Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer saves a shot warming up

19.31: Viktor Kassai is in charge of tonight's game - with the Hungarian a lucky charm of some sort for Barcelona.

He oversaw their 4-0 win over AC Milan at the Nou Camp earlier this year and was also in charge of the 2011 Champions League final at Wembley where the Spanish side defeated Manchester United 3-1.

Bayern Munich last had the official in their 2-1 defeat at Real Madrid in last year's semi-final.

19.26: They may be stars everyone wants to see but Barcelona were greeted by jeers from the home fans as they took to the pitch for their warm-up.

19.23: Whatever you think of this current Bayern Munich team there is no denying how impressive their current form is. They have won 19 of their last 20 matches in all competitions - with that one blemish being the second-leg defeat against Arsenal in the last 16.

Jupp Heynckes' team have won all 13 Bundesliga games this year and are on course for the treble having reached the final of the German cup following a 6-1 semi-final win over Wolfsburg.

Club legend: Bayern president Uli Hoeness arrives at the Allianz Arena

Flying the flag: Bayern Munich and Barcelona fans gathered outside of the Allianz Arena

19.18: From InfostradaLive:

Victor Valdes plays his 48th CL KO match, overtaking Ryan Giggs (47) as player with most CL KO appearances.

19.13: Full line-ups from the Allianz Arena:

Bayern Munich v Barcelona
Bayern Munich: Neuer, Lahm, Boateng, Dante, Alaba, Javi Martinez, Schweinsteiger, Robben, Muller, Ribery, Gomez. Subs: Starke, Van Buyten, Shaqiri, Rafinha, Pizarro, Gustavo, Tymoschuk.

Barcelona: Valdes, Dani Alves, Pique, Bartra, Jordi Alba, Xavi, Busquets, Iniesta, Sanchez, Messi, Pedro. Subs: Pinto, Fabregas, Villa, Thiago, Montoya, Abidal, Song.

Referee: Viktor Kassai (Hungary)

19.08: From OptaPaolo:

25 - Bayern have always scored at home in the Champions League against Spanish opposition (13 games), scoring 25 goals in total. Assurance.

Way back when: Bayern Munich's Stefan Effenberg (right) tracks Barcelona's Sonny Anderson

Revenge: First leg goals from Lionel Messi, Samuel Eto'o and Thierry Henry helped Barcelona thump Bayern Munich 5-1 on aggregate in the 2009 Champions League quarter-finals

19.05: Bayern Munich won two Champions League group stage meetings in 1998, but Barcelona finally triumphed over the German side when they strolled to a 5-1 aggregate victory in the Champions League quarter-finals four years ago.

In fact they effectively won the tie by half-time of the first leg at the Nou Camp, following a brace from Lionel Messi and strikes from Thierry Henry and Samuel Eto'o.

19.00: Despite their regular participation in Europe's top competition - these sides have only clashed in three previous seasons.

The first was in the 1996 UEFA Cup semi-final when Bayern edged through 4-3 on aggregate - a tie where in the clash at the Nou Camp, Sergio Busquets' (who starts tonight) father Carles featured - as did Pep Guardiola.

18.55: Mario Mandzukic is suspended for Bayern, so therefore Mario Gomez plays up top. The more agile Jerome Boateng starts in front of Daniel van Buyten.

French following: A fan holds a France flag with Bayern's Franck Ribery on the front

18.50: So Messi returns for Barcleona and will lead an attack along with Pedro Rodriguez and Alexis Sanchez. Marc Bartra starts in defence in place of injured pair Javier Mascherano, Carlos Puyol and the suspended Adriano.

18.45: Barcelona starting XI:

Valdes, Alves, Bartra, Pique, Alba, Xavi, Busquets, Iniesta, Pedro, Messi, Alexis.

18.40: Bayern Munich starting XI:

Neuer, Lahm, Boateng, Dante, Alaba, Schweinsteiger, Martinez, Robben, Muller, Ribery, Gomez.

On the move: Mario Gotze (centre) will join Bayern Munich this summer

18.35: Bayern Munich have already been making headlines today, after it emerged Mario Gotze will join the club from Borussia Dortmund for £32m in what will be Pep Guardiola's first signing when he takes over at Munich this summer.

A huge statement of intent that, with the 20-year-old midfielder one of Europe's most highly sought after players.

18.30: From OptaJean:

1 - Barcelona have only won one of their 6 competitive encounters with Bayern Munich (D2, L3). Stress.

18.25: The fact that Barcelona are not huge favourites (if they are favourites at all) to win tonight shows just how far Bayern Munich have come this season.

They continue to shine in Europe of course but their domestic form has been nothing short of devastating - it should be quite a contest.

Back in business: Lionel Messi is poised to return for Barcelona

18.20: It's been a lovely sunny St. George's Day in the UK, and the weather is looking good in Munich too ahead of tonight's game. It's 16 degrees at the Allianz Arena where fans are already arriving.

18.15: No full team news yet but it seems Lionel Messi is fully fit for Barcelona, having not featured since coming off the bench in the quarter-final win against Paris Saint-Germain in the last round. That's a big boost for Barca who have stuttered at times on their travels around the continent this term.

18.10: There may be no English teams left but what a final four we have in this season's Champions League!

As it turns out it will be a double dose of Spain v Germany, and while Real Madrid are favourites to edge past Borussia Dortmund, it appears much closer between Bayern Munich and Barcelona - the latter of course, the main event this evening.
