A 7-year-old boy died in an apparent accident during a family shooting trip in Kansas on Friday.
Police are still piecing together the exact order of events that led to Gavin Brummett's death on Friday evening.
Initial reports state that Gavin was out shooting semi-automatic handgun with his father and brother when he was killed.
Gavin's father Rodney Brummett Jr.
told the police that he heard two shots fired in rapid succession
immediately before he turned to look at Gavin.
Saline County Sheriff Glen Kochanowski confirmed that Gavin was the one who fired the fatal shots from a Master Piece Arms semi-automatic 9mm handgun.
When Mr Brummett saw that his son was injured, he took him to the local hospital in Salina.
The Salina Journal reports that from there, the boy was transferred to Wesley Medical Center in Witchita by air ambulance at 6.44pm, less than an hour after he was initially shot.
Though the police have stated
that they believe that Gavin was the one to fire the two deadly shots,
the incident is still being investigated and an autopsy will have the
final say when it is released later Monday.
The Kansas City Star reports that Mr Brummett took his sons shooting with one gun that evening. A family interest in guns comes as little surprise as public records prove that Mr Brummett had a hunting license issued in Alaska in 2003.
Family friends launched a memorial page on Facebook and a Fundrazr campaign raising money to cover the cost of the funeral.
After a little over a day, the Fundrazr site had collected $2,360 for the funeral and the incidental expenses.
