Blue Square Premier play-off final will be an all-Welsh affair after Newport

Wembley will host an all-Welsh affair in the Blue Square Premier Play-Off final after Newport County beat Grimsby and Wrexham beat Kidderminster Harriers to set up the clash on Sunday, May 5.

Justin Edinburgh's Newport County beat Grimsby 1-0 at Rodney Parade, for a 2-0 aggregate win, while player-manager Andy Morrell guided his team to a 3-1 win away at Kidderminster, making it 5-2 on aggregate.

This is the second trip to Wembley for Morrell and Wrexham's this year - they beat Grimsby in the FA Trophy in March.

All-Welsh final: Newport County's win over Grimsby means it will be an all-Welsh final

The result will come as a particularly bitter pill for Kidderminster fans as they finished just two points off the automatic promotion spot and a full 13 points ahead of Wrexham in the league.

Trailing 2-1 from the first leg, the Harriers knew they had to assert themselves and almost did when Michael Gash hit the crossbar early on.

But they were caught cold as veteran striker Brett Omerod capped a fine counter attack to give Wrexham the lead after half an hour.

Kidderminster eqaulised through Cheyenne Dunkley mid-way through the second-half, before Joe Clarke put Wrexham back in front just five minutes later.

Heroics from Chris Maxwell in the Wrexham goal kept them in the lead and a Neil Ashton penalty five minutes from time broke the hearts of 6,000 Kidderminster fans.

'I don't think I could have asked any more of the lads,' a dejected Harriers manager Steve Burr told the Kidderminster Shuttle.

'We didn't get the rub of the green today. I thought we played particularly well in the first half, but you need a bit of fortune on days like this and we didn't get it.'

Burr admitted it will be difficult to raise moral after an excellent season ended in disappointment.

'It will be difficult to pick up the lads, the dressing room was quite a sombre place. Time is a healer and we need to get over it because we'll be back in two or three months. But it is hard to take.'

Wrexham boss Morrell was pleased with the way his side stood up to a firm test from Kidderminster.

He told the club's official website: 'They asked questions of us but we stood up to it. they got back into it, but we went down the other end and scored again - that little bit of luck we have been missing in the last few weeks.'

In front of a huge crowd of 6,000 people, Christian Jolley's first-half goal was enough for Newport to sink Grimsby as County put in a superb defensive performance to blunt Grimsby's attack.

Former Chelsea goalkeeper Lenny Pidgeley produced a couple of excellent saves for the home side, as the Mariners threw everything into finding a goal.

Key man: Christian Jolley scored the only goal of the game to send the Exiles to Wembley

'It's unbelievable, look at the atmosphere. The fans are buzzing, we're buzzing, we've had a great day,' Jolley, a £20,000 summer signing from AFC Wimbledon, told BBC Radio Wales.

'We kept a clean sheet against Grimsby in two legs and it's a great achievement.'It's brilliant, I can't ask for more. I've been here since January permanently now and it's the icing on the cake.... you've seen us today, we were brilliant.'
